The transformation of University Field to Joe Nathan Field was completed in May 2011. Named after the six-time MLB All-Star and Stony Brook Hall of Famer Joe Nathan, the 1,000-seat facility will be among the finest in the Northeast region. The old grass surface was removed in favor of the same FieldTurf that is used at LaValle Stadium. The outfield fences down the left and right field lines were pushed back from 320 to 330 feet while the center field fence went from 410 to 390 feet. Among the other amenities were new bullpens and new dugouts. A second phase that would include a new scoreboard, stadium seating, lights and a press box is currently in the planning stages, but needs financial support.
Stony Brook opened Joe Nathan Field on May 20, 2011 against Albany and defeated the Great Danes 6-1. Below are the firsts in the field's history. All firsts occurred in the first game of the doubleheader on May 20 unless otherwise noted:
