Five Stony Brook student-athletes - Egil Anonsen (men's tennis), Georgia Bushell (women's tennis), Rachel Goldsmith (volleyball), Dale Summerville (cross country) and Marrisa Trachtenberg (women's lacrosse) - were named Chancellor Scholar-Athlete award winners, as the State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Robert L. King announced on Wednesday.
The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division l, Division lll and NJCAA levels. The recipients were selected by the athletic directors at each level of play. Region 3 of the NJCAA selected recipients from two-year schools; the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selected student-athletes from Division lll schools and the four athletic directors or their representatives selected student-athletes from Division l schools.
"The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award embodies the concept of hard work, dedication and success," said King.  "We are extremely proud of these student's accomplishments and for serving as role models for their fellow student-athletes as well as the many children across New York who look up to them."
Anonsen, a senior from Oslo, Norway, is posting a 3.84 grade point average in computer engineering. A 2003-04 captain of the men's tennis team, he has racked up a career record of 124-57 in his three-plus seasons. Stony Brook's all-time wins leader, Anonsen holds the school record for singles (70) and doubles (54) victories. This season, he has a 22-4 singles record in 2004, including 17-1 in dual match play. An All-America East selection and ITA All-Academic Team member in 2001-02, Anonsen has earned America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll honors for the last three years.
Bushell, a senior from Brisbane, Australia, holds a 3.7 GPA in psychology. A 2003-04 captain of the women's tennis team, she has posted a record of 78-43 over the past three-plus seasons. A member of the 2001-02 ITA All-Academic Team, Bushell ranks second all-time at Stony Brook in total wins (78), doubles wins (36) and singles wins (42). Bushell, who was a member of the 2002-03 America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll, also received the Stony Brook Undergraduate Recognition Award.
Goldsmith, a senior from Aurora, Illinois, holds a 3.96 GPA in social work. A first team All-America East selection and two-time America East Player of the Week selection in 2003, she ranks third in school history in total attacks (3,972) and fourth in kills (1,471).
A CoSIDA Academic All-District first team selection in 2003, Goldsmith has been named to the America East Fall Honor Roll for three straight years while posting a 4.0 GPA for the last three semesters.
Summerville, a junior from Waiuku, New Zealand, holds a 3.52 GPA with a double major in business management and economics. A three-year member of the men's cross country team, he finished fourth at the America East Championships, second at the Albany Invitational and ninth at the Metropolitan Championships this season. Summerville, who was a member of the 2003 America East Commissioner's Honor Roll, posted a fourth place finish at the 2003 America East championships, which was the highest finish ever for the SB men.
Trachtenberg, a sophomore from Freeport, N.Y., has a 3.8 GPA in political science. The defender/attack received America East second-team and All-Rookie honors in her freshman campaign after finishing fourth in the America East and first on the team with 3.12 points per game last season. Trachtenberg scored a team-best 38 goals and 53 points while tying for the team lead in assists while helping to  lead SB to an America East playoff appearance in program's inaugural season. A resident assistant at Stony Brook, she was also a member of the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll.
The awards were presented at a ceremony at State University Plaza in Albany. In all, 57 students from 26 State University campuses who competed in 27 different sports with a collective grade point average of 3.6 were honored.
