Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Senior men's tennis player Egil Anonsen and senior cross country/track & field standout Jackie Nunez were named the Stony Brook University Male and Female Athletes of the Year Monday night at the annual athletic awards banquet. Anonsen, the winningest player in the program's history, led the team to a program-best 19-3 mark and its third straight appearance in the America East finals. Nunez enjoyed a record-setting year which saw her capture the 2003 America East Women's Cross Country title and the conference crown in the outdoor mile.
A co-captain this season, Anonsen led the Seawolves to a school record 19 wins and their first ever appearance in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. He culminated his career with a spectacular senior season, posting a 23-4 singles record and a team-best 18-1 mark in dual match play, a school record for wins in a single season. At season's end he was recognized as an All-America East selection for the second time, leading the team to its third consecutive appearance in the conference final. He finished his career as the school's all-time wins leader in both singles and doubles competition, recording a tremendous 127-57 overall record during his four-year career. In addition to his athletic success, he has maintained a 3.84 grade point average while majoring in computer engineering and has been a member of the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll for the last three years.
Nunez started off the cross country season in unbelievable fashion, capturing first place in the team's first four races, while becoming the first Stony Brook harrier to win the individual title at the Metropolitan Championships. She then stretched her unbeaten streak to five by winning the 2003 America East Women's Cross Country Championship, shattering her own course record while tying for the sixth-best performance in America East history. Her success poured over into the track season, where she also picked up conference titles in the indoor mile and distance medley relay, while winning her second straight America East title in the outdoor 1,500-meters. She is the Stony Brook record holder in the indoor mile, 800m and 1,000-meters and the outdoor 1,500m and 3,000-meters. The honor marks the third straight time that the Stony Brook Female Athlete of the year has been a member of the cross country and track program.
