Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Danie Caro has been named the first head women's lacrosse coach in Stony Brook University history, Dean of Physical Education & Athletics Dr. Richard Laskowski announced. Stony Brook will officially begin its first season of women's lacrosse competition in the 2002-03 academic year and it will be the first new sport added to the athletic department since the university elevated football to varsity status in 1984. The addition of women's lacrosse will increase the total number of varsity sports offered at Stony Brook to 20.
Caro comes to Stony Brook with over seven years of coaching experience, the most recent being a two-year stint from 1999-2000 as head women's lacrosse coach at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y. At St. Bonaventure, Caro directed the transition of a team from club to Division I varsity status for the second time in her career.
Prior to SBU, Caro worked for one season as an assistant at Colgate University after a two-year stay as the head coach at Manhattan College. At Manhattan, she also guided the team through the transition from club to varsity status. Caro began her coaching career in 1984 as an assistant at Frostburg State, a position she held for one season.
Stony Brook's Director of Athletics Sandy Weeden is thrilled to have Caro on board. "We were very fortunate to have hired someone with Danie's experience to start a new women's sport at Stony Brook University and one we expect will be very successful in a few short years," Weeden stated. "Danie Caro brings knowledge, enthusiasm and recruiting experience to our program and we are very excited about our future with her at the helm."
Caro, a 1993 graduate of Colgate University, will assume the position of head coach this summer and will work the 2001-02 academic year to recruit a team for its inaugural season in the spring of 2003.
Stony Brook currently offers 19 varsity sports, 10 for men and nine for women. The men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and swimming while the women's sports include: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and volleyball.
