Goldsmith, Trachtenberg, Anonsen Named America East Scholar-Athletes

July 20, 2004

Boston, Mass. - Stony Brook's Rachel Goldsmith (volleyball), Marrisa Trachtenberg (women's lacrosse) and Egil Anonsen (men's tennis) were named America East Scholar-Athletes for their respective sports, America East Commissioner Chris Monasch announced on Tuesday.

A committee of athletics administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose the honorees from the nearly 3,500 student-athletes who competed at America East institutions in 2003-04. Each honoree was a starter or prominent reserve on his or her team and has a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20. First-year students, including transfer students, are not eligible for these honors.

Goldsmith, a senior from Aurora, Ill., holds a 3.96 GPA in social work. A first team All-America East selection and two-time America East Player of the Week selection in 2003, she ranks third in school history in total attacks (3,972) and fourth in kills (1,471). A CoSIDA Academic All-District first team selection in 2003, Goldsmith has been named to the America East Fall Honor Roll for three straight years while posting a 4.0 GPA for the last three semesters.

Trachtenberg, a sophomore from Freeport, N.Y., has a 3.8 GPA in political science. The defender/attack was named to the America East second team for the second straight year after ranking among the team leaders in nearly every category, including caused turnovers, ground balls and scoring. Trachtenberg earned All-Rookie honors in her freshman campaign after finishing fourth in the America East and first on the team with 3.12 points per game last season. Trachtenberg scored a team-best 38 goals and 53 points while tying for the team lead in assists while helping to lead SB to an America East playoff appearance in program's inaugural season. A resident assistant at Stony Brook, she is a two-time member of the America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll.

Anonsen, a senior from Oslo, Norway, is posting a 3.84 grade point average in computer engineering. A 2003-04 captain of the men's tennis team, he has racked up a career record of 127-57 in his four seasons. Stony Brook's all-time wins leader, Anonsen holds the school record for singles (71) and doubles (56) victories. This season, he has a 23-4 singles record in 2004, including 18-1 in dual match play, a school record for wins in a single season. A two-time All-America East selection and an ITA All-Academic Team member in 2001-02, Anonsen earned America East Winter/Spring Honor Roll honors for the last three seasons.
