Seawolves Welcome Women's Lacrosse As 20th Varsity Sport

Aug. 23, 2001

Stony Brook, NY -- - Stony Brook's brand-new 8,000-seat stadium continues to show great promise for completion in the spring of 2002. One of the sports the stadium will house - women's lacrosse - has begun its construction as a Division I varsity program and will be ready to compete shortly.

The Division of Athletics announced earlier this year that women's lacrosse would become the department's 20th varsity sport. On July 15, 2001 Danie Caro was named the program's first head coach and has already begun recruiting hard.

The Seawolves will play their first America East schedule in 2003, but plan on being on the field before that.

"It is our intent to be working with athletes currently on campus and begin a secondary season in the fall of 2002," said Sandy Weeden, Director of Athletics. "Our brand-new stadium, the hiring of Coach Caro and our ability to provide scholarships for student-athletes will allow us to move along quickly towards becoming a competitive force in the America East ."

Caro is familiar with building as this is the third time starting a brand-new program.

Coach Caro comes to the Seawolves following a two-year stint at St. Bonaventure, where she started the varsity program. After an 0-12 inaugural season, Caro led the Bonnies to a 6-10 record and coached the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Year.

Before St. Bonaventure, Caro was the head coach at Manhattan, winning 12 games in two seasons.

"I'm excited that thing have moved along as quickly as they have. It will be quite a feeling when we take the field for the first time next fall," said Caro.
