Paul Schlickmann, former Associate Director of Athletics for Varsity Program Administration and Football Operations at Yale University, has been named Senior Associate Director of Athletics at Stony Brook University, Director of Athletics Jim Fiore announced this morning. Next to Fiore, he will be the highest-ranking administrator in the Stony Brook athletic department.
"I couldn't be happier to have Paul join the Stony Brook athletic department family," said Fiore. "He brings a wealth of administrative experience to our department that will help us continue to create and build a winning culture that will permeate through all aspects of our department. He is a talented administrator who understands that the primary function of intercollegiate athletics at Stony Brook is to advance the educational mission of the university."
Schlickmann arrives at SBU after 10 years as an athletic administrator at Yale working in all facets of Yale's internal and external operations.
"I'm very excited to join the Stony Brook University community and the department of athletics," stated Schlickmann. "I have great respect for Jim Fiore and his vision for the future of Stony Brook athletics. This is a terrific opportunity to work closely with Jim, all the coaches and staff to develop a Division I program to be reckoned with in the America East Conference and beyond."
For the last four years, Schlickmann has supervised the daily internal operations of 35 intercollegiate programs as a member of the senior management team that sets department policy at Yale. He was responsible for all varsity program operations for men's soccer and men's lacrosse while also overseeing facility operations and event management. His football operations duties included the oversight of 150 gameday personnel in the 60,000-seat Yale Bowl which had an average attendance of over 23,000 for Yale home games. In addition, he served as the athletics department liaison to undergraduate admissions and financial aid while managing and formulating team budgets.
Schlickmann began his career as an assistant men's basketball coach at Worcester State College where he stayed for two years before moving on to take on the role of a graduate assistant at Springfield College. At Springfield, he worked for one year as both an assistant men's basketball coach and a graduate assistant to the Director of Athletics. Schlickmann then interned at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for one year before being hired as the Assistant Athletics Director for Varsity Program Administration at Yale in 1993, a title he held until 1999 when he was promoted to Senior Assistant Athletics Director for Varsity Program Administration and Football Operations.
In addition to his duties at Yale, Schlickmann was the Ivy League administrative liaison for men's soccer and men's and women's squash coaches. He has been a member of several committees including the ECAC Championships Committee, the ECAC Robbins Division I Scholar-Athlete Award Committee and the Officials Negotiating Committee for Connecticut Coalition of Colleges and Universities.
At the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Schlickmann served as a sector coordinator where he coordinated various aspects of facility preparation and event planning for the men's and women's soccer venue. He also worked as the Deputy Commissioner of the Special Olympics World Games in the summer of 1995.
Schlickmann earned his bachelor or arts in American studies in 1989 from Trinity College, where he was a member of the men's basketball team. He later received his master of science degree in physical education from Springfield College in 1995.
