Stony Brook, N.Y. - STONY BROOK FOOTBALL REPORT (2-4, 0-1 this week) AIR ATTACK LEADS SACRED HEART PAST STONY BROOK, 23-8 Stony Brook, N.Y. - Justin Holtfreter threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns to lead Sacred Heart to a 23-6 win over Stony Brook at Seawolves Field Saturday afternoon. The win improves Sacred Heart's record to 6-0, 4-0 in Northeast Conference play while Stony Brook falls to 2-4, 1-4 in conference action.

After Stony Brook turned the ball over on downs early in the second quarter, Sacred Heart struck quickly. On the very next play, Holtfreter connected with DeVeren Johnson on an 80-yard bomb for a touchdown for the first score of the game. The extra point was good and the Pioneers led 7-0.

Later in the quarter with Stony Brook pinned deep in their own territory, Sacred Heart linebacker Jayson Jarrett chased Stony Brook quarterback Brian Stanley in the end zone forcing him to throw the ball away. Stanley was flagged for intentional grounding and the Pioneers were awarded a safety to take a 9-0 lead.

On the first possession of the third quarter, Sacred Heart came out and put together an 11-play, 67-yard drive capped by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Holtfreter to Doug Geoffrey and the Pioneers were up 16-0. Geoffrey turned in an outstanding performance, making 12 catches for 120 yards and one touchdown.

Stony Brook's only score of the game came late in the third quarter when Ralph Menendez broke off a career-high 80-yard touchdown run to inch the Seawolves back into the game. The two-point conversion failed and Sacred Heart led 16-6. Menendez finished with 183 yards on 24 carries. It was Stony Brook's first 100+ yard rushing effort since the season opening win against Southern Connecticut.

Marvin Royal's four-yard touchdown run with 2:23 remaining in the game closed out the scoring. The touchdown was set up after a failed fake punt attempt by Stony Brook at its own 15-yard line.

Holtfreter connected on 28-of-44 passes on the afternoon. Stanley threw for 108 yards and David Rodriguez, who entered the game in the third quarter, was 3-of-7 for 48 yards in just over one quarter of play for Stony Brook. Kevin Csoka caught seven passes for 66 yards in a losing effort.

Stony Brook is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Monmouth. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m.

STONY BROOK WOMEN'S SOCCER REPORT (7-7-1, 1-1 this week) SEAWOLVES SHUT DOWN CORNELL IN OVERTIME Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team (7-7-1) needed just 2:40 into overtime to notch a 2-1 victory over Cornell (2-10) on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

After a scoreless first half, Stony Brook junior Kerri McCabe got the Seawolves on the board early in the second stanza with her 10th goal of the season. McCabe's shot from the left side found the upper right corner of the net at the 45:44 mark, giving USB the 1-0 lead. Stony Brook held the 1-0 advantage for nearly 25 minutes, but Cornell wasn't going to give up easily. The Big Red controlled the tempo much of the half and tied the score with 20 minutes remaining when junior Erica Olson took a cross from junior Andrea Madison and scored at the 70:11 mark.

The final 20 minutes saw excellent opportunites for both teams to put the game away. However, the Seawolves failed to score on a breakway opportunity and two Cornell players saw their potential gamewinners ricochet off the crossbar. Stony Brook goalkeeper Lori Nelson made four saves in the half, six overall, to keep Cornell at bay.

Stony Brook's Beth Arikian tallied the gamewinner in the 93rd minute when her free kick from 35 yards out sailed just over the outstretched hands of Cornell goalkeeper Martha Shaughnessy.

The win marked the Seawolves' third overtime contest in four outings. It was the second straight overtime loss for Cornell.

Stony Brook returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when the Seawolves travel to face Hofstra. QUINNIPIAC RALLIES TO DEFEAT SEAWOLVES IN OVERTIME Stony Brook, N.Y. - Elisa Goncalves' second goal of the game 2:07 into the first overtime capped a three-goal rally and lifted Quinnipiac to a 3-2 win over Stony Brook on a cold and windy afternoon at University Field.

Stony Brook took control of the game in the first half on goals by Jen Fontanetta and Kerri McCabe. Fontanetta tallied at the 19:01 mark when she flicked a corner kick past Jenna Lawless for a 1-0 lead. McCabe added to the lead just before the half when Lawless misplayed her corner kick and punched the ball into her own goal.

Stony Brook still maintained control of the game and failed to convert two good chances in the second half that would have padded its lead. Quinnipiac began its comeback at 78:18 when Goncalves ran onto a long wind-aided pass from Chandra Manuelpillai that was misplayed by the SB defense and blasted it by Seawolves goalie Lori Nelson to slice the lead to 2-1. The Braves continued to press for the game-tying goal and got it with 4:38 remaining when Meghan Kennedy knocked home the rebound of a Goncalves shot to knot the game at two.

In the first overtime period, Goncalves pounced on a loose ball in front of the Stony Brook goal following a direct kick and blasted it home for the game-winner. The win marked the second straight year that Quinnipiac defeated the Seawolves in overtime.

Jenna Lawless made eight saves to earn the win as Quinnipiac improves to 7-4-1 on the year. Nelson made five saves for Stony Brook which falls to 6-7-1 on the year.

STONY BROOK MEN'S SOCCER REPORT (9-1-1, 1-0-1 this week) CAMERON LEADS SEAWOLVES TO 3-0 WIN OVER MANHATTAN Riverdale, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Kevin Cameron led the 25th-ranked Stony Brook men's soccer team (9-1-1, 2-1-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference) to its eighth shutout on the season Saturday afternoon as the Seawolves defeated Manhattan 3-0.

Cameron scored the first goal of his Stony Brook career in the 30th minute after a scramble in the box to give the Seawolves a 1-0 halftime lead. Just five minutes into the second stanza, freshman Shane Arikian added to the Seawolves total when he took a shot from the top of the box off a cross from sophomore Ivan Perez. Cameron tallied his second goal just five minutes later to close out the scoring and seal Stony Brook's ninth win of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Dan Ferrin had three saves to earn his eighth shutout. Manhattan goalkeeper Antonio Treglia registered eight saves on the afternoon.

Stony Brook returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 17, when the Seawolves travel to Bucknell. Kickoff is 5 p.m.

SEAWOLVES TIE AT ALBANY Albany, N.Y. -- Albany (5-3-3, 0-0-2 ASC) scored twice in the final 16 minutes to erase a 2-0 deficit and earn a 2-2 tie with 25th-ranked Stony Brook (8-1-1, 2-1-1 ASC) in an Atlantic Soccer Conference match on Tuesday afternoon in Albany. Shane Arikian opened the scoring at 51:16 when he took a pass from Everett Watts and put the Seawolves up 1-0. Twelve minutes later, Arikian set up Watts and the Seawolves held a 2-0 advantage.

However, Albany's Charlie Justino converted a crossing pass from Jon Brainard at the 73:09 mark and freshman Jamal Lis-Simmons scored off a deflection in the 80th minute to force overtime.

Both teams had several opportunites in each overtime period, as Arikian had two shots that were barely wide and an Albany player saw his potential gamewinner bounce off the left post.

VOLLEYBALL COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT Stony Brook, NY -- - Stony Brook made a dramatic comeback against Seton Hall Saturday night, but it fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Pirates at the USB Sports Complex. Seton Hall (7-14) snapped an eight-match losing streak and handed the Seawolves their fifth loss in five-game matches this season.

Stony Brook led throughout much of game five until Jenna Meyers' service ace gave the Pirates their first lead of the game at 9-8. Tara Brooks' kill gave the Pirates a two-point cushion at 12-10, but consecutive attack errors tied the game at 12-12. Stony Brook's Debra Falkenberg tied the match for the final time at 13 and then Beth Lawlor and Brooks put together back-to-back kills to end the match.

It looked as though the Pirates would roll to a sweep, winning games one and two. Cynthia Orengo had other plans, helping the Pack hold on for a 15-13 win after the Seawolves led game three, 13-6. Orengo's great play continued in game four, helping the Seawolves cruise to a 15-8 win to force game five.

Seton Hall pulled away at the end of game one - winning five of the game's final six points to turn a 10-9 lead into a 15-10 game victory.
