Merkinger Leads Monmouth to 34-7 Pounding of Seawolves
West Long Branch, NJ -- Junior Matt Merklinger rushed for 116 yards and four touchdowns as Monmouth (3-4, 3-3 NEC) handed Stony Brook (2-5, 1-5 NEC) its fourth straight loss Saturday at Kessler Field, 34-7. The Hawks evened the series at 1-1 with the victory.
Merklinger scored on a pair of one-yard touchdown runs in the first half to stake the Hawks to a 14-0 lead. The second score was set-up by a Stony Brook fumble by Clinton Graham that was recovered by the Hawks on the Stony Brook one-yard line.
The Hawks' special teams unit partially blocked a Dan Sable punt with 7:23 to go in the first half. What ensued was a Monmouth drive that lasted 3:55 and resulted in a 39-yard field goal by Chris Mandell to close out the first half scoring.
The Hawks opened the third quarter with scores on its first three possessions. Mandell hit another field goal from 38 yards out and Merklinger ran in from 14- and four-yards out as Monmouth built a 34-0 advantage. Monmouth scored on five straight possessions bridging the second and third quarters. In the meantime, the defense forced Stony Brook into five straight punts to take control of the game.
The Seawolves avoided the shutout as David Rodriguez plunged in from one-yard out with 4:33 remaining. Chad King gave the Seawolves the opportunity as he picked off his team-leading fourth pass of the season.
The real story of the day was the Monmouth defense, which allowed the Seawolves' offense to cross midfield twice on the afternoon, holding the Pack to 168 total yards on 58 plays. The Hawks allowed Stony Brook just 76 yards through the air and sacked the quarterback six times.
Senior Ralph Menendez inched closer to the school rushing record, collecting 99 yards on 23 carries. He now needs 21 yards to break the record of 2,342 set by Oliver Bridges.
Alexis Ayala led the Seawolves with 10 tackles - nine that were unassisted.
The Seawolves head to Jacksonville next Saturday.
STONY BROOK WOMEN'S SOCCER REPORT

Seawolves shut down Cornell in overtime
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Joanna Dawson and Jaime Clark each notched a goal and an assist to lead St. John's (11-8) past Stony Brook (7-9-1) in a Division I women's soccer matchup Sunday afternoon at University Field.
The Seawolves got on the board first in the 17th minute on a beautiful goal by Lauren Canino. Midfielder Lisa Mariano raced down the sideline and lofted a cross in front of the Red Storm goal which Canino volleyed past Tina Fogg to give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
St. John's got even in the 36th minute when Dawson sent a ball upfield that Diane Abeles chipped over Lori Nelson who got caught out of the goal and the game was even at one. Later in the half, a defensive breakdown led to an own goal that gave St. John's the lead. A giveaway deep in Stony Brook's end saw Dawson cross the ball in front of the Stony Brook goal which glanced off defender Emily Snyder towards Stony Brook's goal. Snyder attempted to keep the ball out of the net but her clearing attempt hit just underneath the crossbar and St. John's led 2-1.
The Red Storm took control early in the second half when Clark fed Dawson down the middle of the field who pushed it underneath a sliding Nelson for a 3-1 advantage at 49:55.
In the 60th minute, the Seawolves got back into the game when Mariano sent another cross in front of the Red Storm goal that Kerri McCabe settled and then rifled a low left-footed shot past Fogg just inside the right post to slice the lead to 3-2. It was McCabe's 12th goal of the season.
Late in the game, Stony Brook pushed everybody forward but was unable to get the equalizer. As a result, St. John's was able clear the ball over Nelson who was out of the goal around midfield. Clark ran onto the loose ball and put it in the open goal with :19 remaining.
Fogg made 11 saves to earn the win while Nelson made seven stops in the loss.
Stony Brook is back in action next Sunday when it travels to Columbia to take on the Lions at 12:00 p.m.
Seawolves drop close one at Hofstra, 4-3
Hempstead, NY -- - Hofstra University scored a pair of goals :45 apart in the second half and extinguished several late Stony Brook (7-8-1) opportunities in defeating the Seawolves, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon. It was the third meeting between the two teams with Hofstra (9-4-1) winning the last two.
Hofstra got on the board in the 12th minute on a goal by Kristen Eidenwile. Lauren Canino answered in the 31st minute - scoring her first collegiate goal. Sarah Greenberg assisted on the goal, one of two on the afternoon. The Pride closed out the first half scoring with a goal to take a 2-1 lead.
Lori Kotzen took a feed from Greenberg and put it in the net to even the score once more. However, Hostra scored twice in less than a minute, getting a goal at 76:55 and 77:40 to take what seemed to be an insurmountable 4-2 lead.
The Seawolves answered the challenge, needing just :11 to close the gap to 4-3. Kerri McCabe tallied her 11th goal of the season unassisted. The Seawolves had several chances to score in the game's final 12 minutes but could not convert.
Lori Nelson made a career-high 12 saves for the Seawolves in the loss, who host St. John's next Sunday afternoon at 1:00.

Seawolves blank Binghamton 4-0 for ninth shutout
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team tallied four goals in the second half as the Seawolves (10-1-2, 3-1-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference) registered their ninth shutout of the season, 4-0, over ASC rival Binghamton (4-8-1, 0-4 ASC) Friday afternoon at University Field.
Neither team could get any offense going in the first half, but Stony Brook came out on fire on the second stanza, scoring two goals in a three-minute span. Although the Seawolves were playing a man down due to injury, junior Everett Watts scored his fifth goal of the season when he took a pass from freshman Shane Arikian on the right side and sent it past Binghamton goalkeeper Gianni Di Ciollo at the 49:00 mark. Arikian didn't waste any time registering a goal of his own, as he took a cross from freshman Dave Mittan and sent it into the left lower corner of the net in the 53rd minute.
The Seawolves added two other goals in a four-minute span later in the half to add to their 2-0 advantage. Senior Alton Allen notched his second goal of the year at 81:11, taking a pass from senior Juan Serna and slipping it past Di Ciollo into the left lower corner. Senior Keith Ginsberg also got in on the action, as his 25-yard free kick found the back of the net in the 86th minute.
Stony Brook outshot the Bearcats 15-4, and Seawolf goalkeeper Dan Ferrin made two saves to record his ninth shutout this season. Binghamton's Di Ciollo made six saves on the afternoon.
With the loss, Binghamton remains winless in the ASC, while Stony Brook moves into a tie for third place.

Seawolves Battle Bucknell to 0-0 overtime tie
Lewisburg, Pa. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team (9-1-2, 2-1-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference), on the road for the fifth consecutive game Tuesday at Bucknell, didn't come away with a win as the Seawolves would have hoped, notching a 0-0 tie with the Bison (7-6-2) in double overtime. However, Stony Brook did not drop a contest in the five-game road swing, recording a 3-0-2 record.
The first half saw the Bison outshoot Stony Brook 8-5 as Bucknell controlled the tempo for much of the first 45 minutes. However, the second half was a different story as the Seawolves' offensive attack came alive. Stony Brook had 10 shots in the second stanza compared to only two for the Bison. Junior Everett Watts had a shot that found the lower right corner of the net in the 73rd minute, but the linesman called offsides and the potential gamewinner was nullified. Watts struck again seven minutes later with a header, but Bison goalkeeper Steve Whitaker made his fifth save of the game to keep the game scoreless.
The first overtime period saw Stony Brook maintain its momentum as the Seawolves got off four shots. Freshman Shane Arikian's shot with just one minute remaining sailed just wide left and the game was extended another 15 minutes.
Bucknell had some excellent opportunities of its own in the final stanza, but the Bison were unable to convert.
Overall, the Seawolves recorded 22 shots and Bucknell had 13. Despite only 17 total fouls, the game was a physical contest that saw two yellow cards for USB and four for the Bison.
Seawolves goalkeeper Dan Ferrin registered five saves on the evening and recorded his eighth shutout, a new Stony Brook record for most shutouts in a season. Whitaker also had five saves in the match.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday when they host ASC opponent Binghamton at University Field. Kickoff is 3 p.m.
