Stony Brook, N.Y. - STONY BROOK FOOTBALL REPORT (2-6, 0-1 this week)

Seawolves Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime, 17-14

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Stony Brook football team (2-6, 1-5 Northeast Conference) came back from a 14-0 deficit at Jacksonville, but fell 17-14 in double overtime for the Seawolves' fifth straight loss.

The Dolphins opened up a 14-0 lead but Stony Brook came storming back late in the first half. The Seawolves had a five-play, 74-yard drive highlighted by a 33-yard run by freshman Clinton Graham. Senior quarterback Brian Stanley's 13-yard pass to Phil Lombardi brought the Seawolves to within 14-7 with 1:28 remaining before intermission.

Stony Brook tied the score in the fourth quarter when Graham's 13-yard run tied the score at 14-14 with 12:20 remaining in the game.

In the first overtime, punter Mike Soto had his field goal attempt blocked. However, Jacksonville was unable to counter when the Dolphins' 36-yard attempt was wide left.

In the second overtime, Jacksonville had the first possesion, and their 27-yard field goal gave them a 17-14 lead.

The Seawolves had a chance to win, but on second down, freshman quarterback David Rodriguez was sacked and Stony Brook was faced with a third-and-18 situation. Rodriguez aimed for the end zone, but had his pass intercepted, giving the Dolphins the win.

Graham had 103 yards on 16 carries for the Seawolves, but the main highlight of the Seawolves' rushing game was senior Ralph Menendez. Menendez's 70 yards on 15 carries gives him 2,412 for his career, a new Stony Brook all-time rushing record.

Stanley had 101 yards passing, while Rodriguez was 2-11 for 15 yards.

The Seawolves are off until Nov. 11, when they travel to face Central Connecticut.

STONY BROOK WOMEN'S SOCCER REPORT (8-9-1, 1-0 this week)

Greenberg Leads Seawolves to 3-2 Overtime Win

New York, N.Y. - Freshman Sarah Greenberg tallied the gamewinner for Stony Brook as the Seawolves (8-9-1) defeated Columbia (4-10-2) in overtime on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions opened up a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, when Meredith Corkery scored off a cross from Jaime Pannone, but the Seawolves scored two straight goals to pull ahead. Sophomore Krisha Zagura evened the game at 1-1 when she knocked home a shot by sophomore Jen Fontanetta at 39:43.

Junior Kerri McCabe notched her 13th goal of the season off assists from Fontanetta and Greenerg 10 minutes into the second half to give Stony Brook the 2-1 advantage. Less than a minute later, the Lions came back to even the score once again. Lauren Papalia took a cross from Ashley Ott and sent it past Stony Brook goalkeeper Lori Nelson at 56:13.

The next 34 minutes remained scoreless and Stony Brook headed into its fifth overtime of the season. The Seawolves controlled the tempo throughout the extra period, and Greenberg scored her third goal this season seven minutes in for the win. Sophomore Beth Arikian took a direct kick that junior Kristin Lynch headed to Greenberg, who kicked it past Columbia keeper Janine Ierardi at 97:03 to seal the win for Stony Brook.

The Seawolves outshot Columbia 28-10 and Nelson made three saves in Stony Brook's eighth win.

STONY BROOK MEN'S SOCCER REPORT (11-1-2, 1-0 this week)

Seawolves Earn Thrilling 3-2 Comeback Win Over Adelphi

Stony Brook, N.Y. - After surrending two early goals, the Stony Brook men's soccer team (11-1-2, 4-1-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference) came back to notch a 3-2 overtime victory over Adelphi (9-5, 4-1 ASC) Wednesday afternoon at University Field.

The Panthers' Anders Salamonssen needed just 4:54 to put Adelphi on the board, as Marcin Pachowicz's corner kick found Salamonssen, who headed the ball into the goal past Stony Brook goalkeeper Dan Ferrin, giving the Panthers the early 1-0 lead. Just 17 minutes later, Jean Marc Simedou took a cross from Marlon McEachnie and slipped it past Ferrin for Adelphi's second score.

Then Stony Brook came to life. With Adelphi goalkeeper Stephen Elliot caught out of the net, freshman Shane Arikian sent the ball to senior Alton Allen from the left side, who rifled it into the net in the 38th minute. Just two minutes later, Adelphi was called for a foul in the box. As Allen was crossing the ball to junior Everett Watts, an Adelphi defender took Watts down with a tackle. Senior Juan Serna netted the penalty kick at 40:04 to even the score at 2-2.

The teams battled evenly throughout the second half as neither could tally the gamewinner. Stony Brook defender Steven Fable kicked a shot out of the goal in the 44th minute, and Ferrin made a spectacular save on Pachowicz's shot in the 83rd minute to keep the Panthers at bay. The Seawolves had an excellent opportunity of their own with just five minutes remaining, but Hector Dillon's shot was tipped by Elliot and sent out of bounds, and the game headed into overtime, USB's third in five games.

Ten minutes into the extra stanza, Adelphi's Paul Stewart was carded for a hard foul. Seawolf defender Jermaine Wright took the free kick from 45 yards away to set up the gamewinner. Allen took a pass from the left side and sent a 15-yard shot just past the reach of Elliot, giving Stony Brook the 3-2 comeback victory. It was Allen's fourth goal of the season and the first time he has scored multiple goals in a match.

The win marks the first time Stony Brook has beaten Adelphi since 1967, when the Seawolves earned a 1-0 overtime victory and compiled an 8-1-2 overall record. Stony Brook's 11 victories also equal the highest win total in USB men's soccer history. For the Panthers, it is their first ASC loss, which ends their three-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Seawolves extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.

"We had everything against us early," Stony Brook head coach Scott Dean said. "We've done it twice now, where we faced a 2-0 deficit against good teams and came back to win. It solidifies the fact that we're a good team and shows that regardless of the score, we can win. It's a huge win for us all the way around, and to come back with that kind of pressure and with our backs against the wall, it makes it that much more satisfying."

Stony Brook returns to action on November 3, when the Seawolves travel to face Nova Southeastern. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
