STONY BROOK FOOTBALL REPORT (2-7, 0-1 this week)

SEAWOLVES SUFFER OVERTIME LOSS, 35-34

New Britain, CT -- Dave Rodriguez's attempted two-point pass to Chris McGovern failed in overtime and Stony Brook (2-7, 1-6 NEC) fell to Central Connecticut, 35-34, Saturday afternoon at Arute Field. Stony Brook lost for the sixth straight time, the longest losing streak since 1990 when the team lost eight straight to open the season.

With the game tied at 28-28 heading into overtime, Central Connecticut (4-6, 3-5 NEC) got the ball first and scored on Clinton Dunston's three-yard run. The extra point was good and the Blue Devils took a 35-28 advantage. The Seawolves answered as Rodriguez hit Chris McGovern for a two-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-34. The Seawolves decided to try to win the game with a two-point conversion, but Rodriguez's pass sailed high over the hands of Kevin McGrogan.

Stony Brook spotted the Blue Devils a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Brian Shubin scored on a two-yard touchdown scamper on a drive that was set-up by a blocked punt deep in Stony Brook territory. On Stony Brook's next possession, Brian Stanley was picked off and the Blue Devils capitalized with another touchdown.

Rodriguez came in for Stanley at quarterback to start the second quarter and immediately engineered a scoring drive, hitting Lucas Niskanen on a scoring pass. On the Seawolves' next possession, Ralph Menendez scored on a 44-yard run to tie the score at 14-14 heading into the half.

On the second play from scrimmage in the second half, Rodriguez rolled to his left and ran 64-yards to set-up a touchdown and Stony Brook took its first lead of the game at 21-14.

Just 1:25 later, Dunston ran 51-yards to tie the game at 21-21. The Seawolves quickly answered as they put together a 65-yard drive, capped off by Clinton Graham's 14-yard touchdown run.

Brian Shubin's five-yard run with 12:48 left in the fourth quarter tied the game for the final time at 28-28. Central Connecticut had an opportunity to win the game, but Mike Kein's 33-yard field goal attempt with :03 left sailed wide left.

Rodriguez enjoyed a career-day for Stony Brook, running for 103 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. In the air, he went 6-for-11 for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns. As a team, the Seawolves ran for 252 yards, led by Menendez' 88 yards on 21 carries.

Defensively, Aiden Smith recorded a team and career high 16 tackles while Paul Thomas had 14.

The Seawolves conclude their season at home against Robert Morris next Saturday at 12:30.

STONY BROOK SWIMMING REPORT (W:2-2, 1-1 this week, M: 0-3, 0-1 this week)

WOMEN FALL TO WAGNER IN FINAL RACE

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Wagner women's swimming team edged Stony Brook, 117-115, at the Stony Brook pool Wednesday night.

Sarah Doret and Starlyn Rupinski each won two events Tuesday night. Rupinski continued her outstanding year by setting a new Stony Brook record in the 50m freestyle. She placed first in the event with a time of 25.73, breaking the old school record of 25.90 previously held by Laura Bartlett.

Rupinski also teamed with Doret in the 400m medley relay that captured first in a time of 4:23.33. Doret placed first in the 200m individual medley in a time of 2:20.82.

Amy Vallebuona registered three first place finishes for Wagner in the 1000m free, 500m free and the 200m butterfly.

With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 2-2 on the year.

STONY BROOK WOMEN'S BASKETBALL REPORT

LoPARRINO SCORES 22 IN EXHIBITION WIN

Theresa LoParrino scored 22 points on six three-pointers as Stony Brook defeated the New York Gazelles in exhibition basketball Tuesday night at the USB Sports Complex.

LoParrino hit four straight three-pointers in the second half, turning a one-point advantage into a 51-36 lead. Her fifth three-pointer of the night gave Stony Brook a 21-point advantage. Danielle DeGiorgio's lay-up allowed Stony Brook its largest lead of the night at 69-43 with 3:25 left.

LoParrino led four Stony Brook players in double figures. Kelli Cofield had 13 points and six rebounds, Jessica Burch collected 12 points, six assists and five steals and Jill George registered 11 points and five rebounds. Freshman Sherry Jordan had team highs in assists and rebounds with seven each.

The Seawolves host Norway in their final tune-up of the preseason next Tuesday at 7:00 pm.

STONY BROOK MEN'S SOCCER REPORT (12-4-2, 0-2 this week)

SEAWOLVES SHUT OUT IN SEASON FINALE

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Hartwick's Rob Catana scored the only goal of the game to lead the Hawks (11-8-1, 5-2-1 Atlantic Soccer Conference) to a 1-0 victory in 23rd-ranked Stony Brook's season finale on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams battled evenly in the first half as each got off only two shots. The second half, however, was an entirely different story. The Hawks had seven shots on goal, while the Seawolves (12-4-2, 5-2-1 ASC) managed only one. Hartwick's pressure paid off in the 57th minute, when forward Rob Catana found himself wide open on the left side. After receiving the cross from Percy Avetrani, he one-timed the ball into the lower left corner past USB goalkeeper Dan Ferrin to give the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.

The Seawolves were unable to counter despite a late rally, and Hartwick posted its fifth straight victory to conclude its season.

Hartwick held the Seawolves to only five shots, Stony Brook's lowest total of the season. Ferrin made six saves, while the Hawks' Randall Moate had four.

With the win, Hartwick posts its second straight victory over a Top 25 team and finishes in second place in the Atlantic Soccer Conference.

Despite suffering back-to-back defeats for the only time this year, the Seawolves conclude their season with the most wins ever in Stony Brook men's soccer history.

COLUMBIA HANDS STONY BROOK THIRD LOSS

New York, N.Y. - Columbia used two penalty kicks and an own goal by Stony Brook to post a 3-0 victory in Division I men's soccer action Wednesday evening in upper Manhattan.

Things got off to a bad start right away for Stony Brook as the Seawolves were whistled for a foul inside the penalty box 10:43 into the game. The Lions' Leslie Fitzpatrick netted the penalty kick opportunity and Columbia led 1-0.

The Lions held the 1-0 advantage into halftime but wasted no time in extending the lead to 2-0 early in the second stanza. Thirty seconds into the half, a scramble in the Stony Brook end saw the ball glance off a Seawolves defender and into the SB goal.

Fitzpatrick added another penalty kick in the 80th minute to extend CU's lead to 3-0.

Dan Ferrin made two saves in a losing effort as Stony Brook falls to 12-3-2.

STONY BROOK VOLLEYBALL REPORT (11-19, 2-1 this week)

O'CONNOR LEADS SEAWOLVES TO WIN OVER IONA

Stony Brook, NY - Junior Jaime O'Connor collected seven service aces and 11 digs in leading the Stony Brook (11-19) to a 15-11, 15-11, 15-10 victory over Iona Wednesday night at the USB Sports Complex. It was the eighth straight win for Stony Brook over Iona as the Seawolves remained undefeated against the Gaels (16-13).

Stony Brook jumped out to a 10-1 lead on a pair of kills from O'Connor and Cynthia Orengo. The Gaels rallied to score 11 of the next 15 points to close within 14-11. Orengo registered one of her eight kills on the night to close out the game.

Game two was nip-and-tuck until the 11th point. With the teams tied at 11, Susanne Westing served out the game, getting another pair of crucial kills from O'Connor to get the game victory.

O'Connor turned a 5-5 game three into a 9-5 advantage with three consecutive service aces and the Seawolves cruised to the win.

Three Stony Brook players registered double figure digs including Rachel Goldsmith and Debra Falkenberg with 11 apiece. Falkenberg also had nine kills. Orengo led all players with 14 kills. Freshman setter Alison Fields had 38 assists.

The Gaels were paced by Kathy Kunath's 12 kills and Lexie McComish's 17 digs. Kunath also contributed with 10 digs and three service aces.

The Seawolves hit .250 as a team and outhit the Gaels, 52-39.

Stony Brook hosts Buffalo Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.

PRINCETON HANDS SEAWOLVES 19th LOSS

Princeton, N.J. - The Stony Brook volleyball team (10-19) fell to Princeton on Tuesday night, 15-7, 15-9, 15-9.

Jaime O'Connor, Cynthia Orengo and Debra Falkenberg each had seven kills to lead the Seawolves, and Rachel Goldsmith had 11 digs but it wasn't enough as Stony Brook suffered its 19th loss on the season. Princeton's Kellie Cramm had 13 kills, while Sabrina King registered a match-high 14 digs to pace the Tigers. Ana Yoerg had 41 assists in the match, while the Seawolves' leader was Alison Fields with 28.

The Seawolves hit just .034, and Princeton (18-8) took advantage as they cruised to their 18th win.

FALKENBERG LEADS STONY BROOK TO WIN OVER LIU

Stony Brook, NY - Stony Brook junior Debra Falkenberg collected a match-high 12 kills and set the school single match record for hitting percentage as the Seawolves downed LIU, 15-4, 15-8, 15-5 Monday at the USB Sports Complex. It was the second win of the season over LIU (11-21) for Stony Brook.

Falkenberg had 12 kills and just one error in 18 attempts - hitting .611. As a team, the Seawolves hit a season-high .309 (32k-11a-68att). It is the first time this season they have hit above .300.

Rachel Goldsmith got the Pack a 4-1 advantage on Stony Brook's first serve and the team never looked back. The Seawolves capitalized on six attack errors in game two to jump out, 10-0, and went on to the win. In game three, Stony Brook erased a 4-3 LIU lead, closing out the game and match with 12 of the final 13 points as Falkenberg served nine consecutive points.

Alison Fields had 22 assists for the Seawolves.

Leading the way for LIU was Cara Strzelczyk, who had nine kills.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Seawolves and extended LIU's losing streak to six matches.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

David Rodriguez - Football - Freshman - Long Branch, N.J.

Although the Seawolves fell to CCSU by one point in overtime this week, Rodriguez came off the bench in the second quarter to put on a phenomenal performance at quarterback. The freshman ran for 103 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. In the air, he went 6-for-11 for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
