STONY BROOK MEN'S BASKETBALL REPORT (1-2, 1-1 this week)

Seawolves' Comeback Falls Short Against Hofstra, 72-60

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Hofstra (4-0) outscored Stony Brook (1-2) 14-8 over the final 6:20 to put away the Seawolves, 72-60, Saturday afternoon at the USB Sports Complex. After falling behind by as many as 18 points in the second half, the Seawolves cut the lead to just six points with just over six minutes remaining. Senior Josh Little (Rocky Hill, Conn.) nailed 4-of-4 free throws and a three-pointer to fuel the comeback as USB drew within 58-52. However, the Pride responded with a run of their own, as Jason Hernandez connected on 3-of-4 free throws and a jumper to extend Hoftra's lead to 67-56 with just 1:33 remaining. Norman Richardson, who led the Pride with 17 points on the afternoon, nailed 5-of-6 free throws to seal the victory for Hofstra. The Pride raced to an 11-2 lead to open the game, but Stony Brook came storming back, outscoring Hofstra 12-0 over the next three minutes to pull ahead 14-11. Senior Chris Balliro (Swampscott, Mass.) led the offensive onslaught, scoring two layups and three free throws, while Little chipped in with a jumper and a three-pointer. The Seawolves' lead grew to four points at 22-18 on Balliro's three with 7:34 remaining in the first half. Hoftra's Joel Suarez responded with two three-pointers and a jumper, eight of his 12 total points, to give the Pride the 33-28 halftime lead. Balliro led Stony Brook with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Little had 12 points on the afternoon. Freshman D.J. Munir (Providence, R.I.) contributed 10 points, while Leon Brisport (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points and five boards. Richardson led four Hoftra players in double figures. Greg Springfield had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Suarez and Rick Apodaca chipped in with 12 and 10, respectively. For Hofstra, the win extends their advantage in the all-time series to 13-1. Stony Brook returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 29, when the Seawolves travel to New Hampshire. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

Stony Brook Dumps New England College in Home Opener, 107-45

Stony Brook, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook Seawolves (1-1) opened their home season in spectacular fashion, jumping out to a 27-2 lead and cruising to a 107-45 victory over Division III New England College (1-2) Tuesday night at the USB Sports Complex. The win represented the largest margin of victory since a 70-point win over Lehman in 1992-93. With the score tied at 2-2, Stony Brook ran off 25 straight points over the next six minutes to take command. Stony Brook did much of the damage from the outside - hitting five three-pointers during the run, three by Josh Little. Jon Nadar's jumper closed the gap to 31-9 with 6:54 remaining in the first half, but the Seawolves answered with a 22-5 run to close the first stanza. D.J. Munir had seven points in that stretch - port of an 11-point, five assists performance by the freshman. Four players had double figures by the half as Jairus McCollum (Mt. Holly, N.J.) had 11 points and Leon Brisport had 10 points and eight rebounds. Stony Brook extended the lead to 64-19 on Little's three-pointer with 18:01 remaining. NEC pulled to within 64-29, the closest the Pilgrims would get. The Seawolves broke the century mark with 3:35 remaining, when Trevor Bryant's layup extended the lead to 101-42. The Seawolves had six players in double figures, as Little led the way with 15, going 5-of-6 from three-point range. Brisport notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards, while McCollum chipped in 13 points. Munir contributed 11 points and six assists, while Nelson Pena (Washington Heights, N.Y.) and J.B. Bennett (Shirley, N.Y.) had 10 apiece. The Pilgrims were led by Dan Romano's 10 points and seven rebounds.

STONY BROOK WOMEN'S BASKETBALL REPORT (2-1, 2-1 this week)

Jordan Carries Seawolves to Win Over UC-Riverside Los Angeles, Calif. -- It's official. Sherry Jordan (Stone Mountain, Ga.) has arrived. The freshman scored 32 points, leading Stony Brook (2-1) to a 73-58 victory over UC-Riverside (2-3) in the consolation game of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic Saturday. Jordan also had seven assists, seven rebounds, four blocks and a pair of steals as the Seawolves secured third place. The game was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half and remained that way until 8:55 remained in the second half. The Seawolves used a 12-4 run over a 2:43 span to take a 59-47 advantage. Two fast break buckets and four free throws highlighted the run. Stony Brook built the lead to as many as 15 and kept the lead to at least nine points the rest of the way. The Seawolves hit 58 percent of their field goals in the second half (14-of-24), a complete turnaround from the 35 percent shooting (11-of-31) in the first 20 minutes. Kelli Cofield (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected 11 rebounds in the first half and Tamika Cox's (Queens, N.Y.) baseline jumper as time expired gave Stony Brook a 28-24 advantage at the break. That was the largest lead of the first half as the game was tied four different times and featured 14 different lead changes. Maggie Triggs' (Essex Junction, Vt.) jumper opened the scoring in the second half as the Seawolves never trailed in the second. Jessica Burch's (Sunnyside, N.Y.) free throw gave the Seawolves a seven-point advantage with 14:03 remaining and it looked as though the Seawolves would cruise. However, an 8-1 Highlander run ensued as Starr Knight collected four points inside. Jordan's two three-pointers and four straight points from Kelli Cofield built the advantage to 51-43 with 8:16 left. Jordan scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds in the opening game and represented the Seawolves on the All-Tournament team. Cofield recorded 10 points and 14 rebounds in the game. The Seawolves come home for a three-game homestand beginning Wednesday night against Army at 7:00.

LMU Bounces Seawolves, 69-54, in LMU Thanksgiving Classic Opener Los Angeles, Calif. -- Stony Brook freshman Sherry Jordan scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but Loyola Marymount (2-0) came away with a 69-54 win over the Seawolves (1-1) Friday night at the LMU Thanksgiving Classic. The Seawolves grabbed their last lead of the game with 13:00 remaining in the first half on a pair of free throws by Jordan. The Lions countered with a 13-0 run to take a 21-10 lead with 6:28 left in the first half. Jordan's jumper capped a 9-0 Seawolves run and with 2:37 left, the Seawolves trailed 21-19. In a game of runs, LMU countered again, this time with a 10-2 run that gave them a 31-21 lead at the break. Stony Brook committed 15 first half turnovers and shot just 28 percent in the first half. The Lions built the lead to 45-29 on a three-point play by Taryn Reynolds, who had 20 points, seven assists and five steals in the win. Theresa LoParrino's (Bronx, N.Y.) first collegiate three-pointer ended a 14-3 Seawolves run and brought the score to 49-41 with 8:47 remaining. It was the last run at LMU for Stony Brook as the Lions raced out to a 21-point advantage with 18 of the next 21 points and they never looked back. Stony Brook will face UC-Riverside in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 6:00 p.m. EST. The Highlanders were 76-51 losers to No. 24 Xavier. Maggie Triggs was the only other player in double figures for the Seawolves, scoring 13 points - 11 in the second half.

Jordan Leads Stony Brook in Season Opener Over Delaware State, 50-37 Stony Brook, N.Y. -- Freshman forward Sherry Jordan had 15 points and 10 rebounds as Stony Brook (1-0) fougth off a sloppy first half to defeat Delaware State (1-2) in its season opener Tuesday night, 50-37. The win snapped a four-game season opening losing streak for the Seawolves, who hadn't won an opener since 1995. The Seawolves shot just 33 percent in the first half and allowed the Hornets to grab 17 offensive rebounds. However, Erika Shipley's feed to Jordan as time expired led to an easy lay-up as the Seawolves led, 22-20, at the break. There were four ties, nine lead changes and a combined 27 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Stony Brook took control in the early stages of the second half. After Kimisha Dabney tied the game at 28-28, the Seawolves used a 16-4 run over the next 6:28 to open a 46-32 advantage with 2:41 remaining. Jordan scored the last five points of the run. The Hornets could not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Jordan was one of three players in double figures as Jessica Burch collected 11 points and Jill George (Manchester, N.H.) had 10. George also had a career-high four blocked shots - all coming in the first half. Maggie Triggs collected nine points and four steals. Chavonne Stewart led Delaware State with 12 points and seven rebounds and Kimisha Dabney had eight points and 11 rebounds. The Hornets were hurt by 23 percent shooting from the field and 28 turnovers.

SHERRY JORDAN

Women's Basketball - Freshman - Stone Mountain, Ga.

Jordan had an outstanding debut week for the Seawolves, leading USB in scoring all three games. The freshman totalled 15 points and 10 rebounds against Delaware State, then led USB with 21 points and nine rebounds in a losing effort against LMU. Jordan exploded for 32 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in USB's win over UC-Riverside, earning LMU All-Tournament Team honors.
