Intercollegiate Sports
Make a gift to support one of our 20 intercollegiate varsity sports and our nearly 450 student-athletes in the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. In addition to supporting the 20 sport programs, there are other areas that round out our efforts to deliver a transformational experience to our student-athletes. Some of those areas include: athletic performance, sports medicine, student-athlete development, sports nutrition, life skills and mental wellness that also require the necessary resources to help us reach our potential. In all areas, we will aim to provide our student-athletes with the best resources to achieve peak performance on and off the field

Student-Athlete Welfare
Support programs, such as athletic performance, sports medicine, student-athlete development, sports nutrition, life skills and mental wellness, are vital to providing our student-athletes the best in care and education.  In order to be an elite level athletics department that can recruit the most talented student-athletes, it is often these intangible needs that make the difference in committing to Stony Brook.

ENDOWMENTS
There are many ways to establish an endowment, and the arrangements for every gift can be personalized to fit your specific needs. Gifts of cash and securities are traditional forms of support; however, planned gifts including bequests, charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts may allow you to make significant contributions that may not otherwise be possible during your lifetime. All endowment gifts are 100% tax deductible.

Seawolves United would like to recognize and thank the loyal and generous support of those who have made a lasting impact on Stony Brook Athletics by establishing an endowment. These endowments provide a perpetual source of income that helps provide the resources needed to strive for the highest levels of excellence in all that we do.

How an Endowment Works
Endowments are often referred to as the "gifts that keep on giving." Endowments are perpetual and give donors the opportunity to support multiple generations of students and faculty, thereby making a lasting impact on Stony Brook.

Endowments are permanently invested by the Stony Brook Foundation, and a portion of the income generated by that investment is used for the purpose you wish to support, such as undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, supplemental salary support for faculty, research, libraries, lectureships, specific programs, discretionary use or other purposes. Another portion of the income is reinvested each year, enabling the endowment principal to grow, maintain its "spending power" against inflation and provide a permanent stream of income over time. The principal is never spent and remains intact. The Stony Brook Foundation endowment policy provides for an annual program distribution of 4.5% of a 5-year rolling average of the endowment market value.

An endowment can create a wonderful and permanent legacy for you or serve as a thoughtful and lasting tribute to a loved one, friend, colleague or favorite professor. A gift to create a new endowment may be made in the form of a multi-year pledge, with gift payments made over a period of up to five (5) years.  The minimum gift to establish an endowment is $100,000.

We invite you to learn more about the many types of endowments available (below) to support your area(s) of interest.

Scholarship Endowments
Scholarship Endowments allow student-athletes to pursue excellence in the classroom while playing the sport they love. Stony Brook Athletics currently provides nearly $8 million to the university each year to cover the cost of providing tuition, room and board, and books for nearly 450 scholarship student-athletes each year. Through a commitment to a scholarship endowment, we will widen our scholarship base and allow more of our athletic programs to stand among the nation's best.

Coaching Endowments
Establishing a continuity with a coaching staff is vital to recruiting at the highest level.  Creating coaching endowments to support the salaries of our coaches helps to ensure that we can recruit and retain the best coaches in the very competitive world of intercollegiate athletics. It gives a donor an opportunity to leave your legacy and personalize your commitment to Stony Brook Athletics.

GIFTS IN KIND
Donated services or items (food and beverage, athletic equipment, printing, and air travel, etc.) that would normally be purchased by the Stony Brook Athletics Department are considered gifts-in-kind, and are always appreciated. Subject to university approval and IRS regulations, the value of the contribution is credited to your name.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES
Consult your financial advisor to find out about the possible tax advantages of donating securities, and remember to ask about donating securities subject to capital gains.

Marketable bonds or other securities that will mature are acceptable as gifts regardless of maturity date. Please contact us for complete instructions to process a gift of securities.

Donor Advised Funds & Private Foundations
Federal law prohibits charitable distributions from either a donor advised fund or private foundation when goods or services that may be considered more than incidental, including premium seats, are obtained by the donor in exchange for the gift.  Therefore, Seawolves United cannot accept seat-related gifts from either a donor advised fund or private foundations and will return such gift if received
