Christopher Cannizzaro

Christopher Cannizzaro, LMHC-D, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Diagnostic Privilege who serves as a Mental Health Counselor for Stony Brook Athletics. He is committed to supporting the mental health, overall well-being, and mental performance of student-athletes, helping them navigate the unique challenges of collegiate athletics while developing the skills necessary to thrive both in competition and in everyday life.

Since 2017, Christopher has worked with athletes across a wide range of competitive levels, from NCAA Division III student-athletes to professional athletes. His approach integrates evidence-based clinical counseling with principles of sport and performance psychology to help athletes build resilience, strengthen confidence, enhance focus, manage stress and optimize performance.

Christopher began his academic career at Suffolk County Community College before transferring to the University of Tampa, where he earned his bachelor's degree in psychology. He went on to receive his Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Sport Performance Counseling from Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Christopher is passionate about fostering a culture where mental health and mental performance are recognized as essential components of athletic success. He enjoys collaborating with coaches, athletic trainers, administrators and support staff to promote student-athlete wellness, provide mental health education, and create environments that support both personal growth and peak performance.

Away from work, Christopher enjoys following and playing sports, with basketball and golf among his favorites.
