Joe Castiglie served as men's basketball head coach from 1984 to 1991, during which he posted a 138-56 record and led the team to a pair of Division III East Regionals. As a student-athlete at Stony Brook, he captained the 1977-78 team that reached the Final Four.
Castiglie played 71 games during his Stony Brook undergraduate career from 1975 through '78. He tallied 139 points, 125 assists, 35 rebounds and shot .495 form the field.
"His approach to helping us grow up as individuals and become responsible young adults has stayed with me to this day," said Charwin Agard, who played for Castiglie during the 1985-86 season, and who was one of the ex-players to nominate him. "His daily lessons to respect one another, love one another, work toward a common goal and — most of all — his approach to life are all things that to this day many of us are proud to look back at and say it was the driving force of who I am today."
