Huskies Blitz Seawolves In Volleyball, 3-1

Boston, MA - - Northeastern outhit Stony Brook (.271-.153) and defeated the Seawolves 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court - handing Stony Brook (11-16, 4-6 AE) a 30-25, 27-30, 30-20, 30-22 loss. It was the fifth loss in six matches for the Seawolves, whose hopes for an America East playoff spot were significantly damaged.

Kristin Deatherage had 18 kills to lead NU's offense and Pellegrini added 14 kills. The catalyst of Stony Brook's offense was Rachel Goldsmith who tallied a game-high 23 kills.

The Huskies took game number one 30-25 behind the play of Pellegrini (five kills) and DiGregorio (four kills). Goldsmith had eight kills in game one alone for Stony Brook.

The Seawolves came out strong in the second game and took a quick 7-1 lead, courtesy of three service aces. NU coach Ken Nichols took a timeout to regain his team's composure and they respoded by battling back to get within three at 9-6.

Stony Brook kept the pressure on and led 29-24. Briana Furch took the serve for the Huskies and got NU as close as 29-27. Debra Falkenberg stopped the Husky run with a kill to end game two at 30-27 for the Seawolves and even up the match at one game apiece. Goldsmith once again led Stony Brook with seven kills.

In game three, Northeastern jumped out to an early 12-7 lead over the Seawolves. NU took game three 30-20 behind eight kills from Deatherage.

The fourth and final game of the match was tight in the beginning with no team managing to pull away from the other as the score was tied at 16. NU then went on a 14-6 run to close out the game and record the victory, 30-22.

With the victory Northeastern improves to 19-8 on the season and 9-1 in America East action, while Stony Brook falls to 11-16 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Stony Brook heads to New Hampshire and Maine for a pair of America East matches next weekend.
