Stony Brook finished its season with a dominant performance at the MCTC championships, winning two of the three doubles flights and three of the six singles flights Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the US Open Tennis Center.
Jens Pillgram-Larsen and Gareth Williams won the top doubles flight with three victories. The pair teamed to defeat Manhattan, 6-3, 6-2 and Pace, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 to make it to the championship match. Stony Brook cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over St. Peter's to win the flight. The two won seven of their eight doubles matches this season.
Egil Anonsen and David Hewitt used a thrilling comeback victory in the championship match over Hofstra, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0). Anonsen and Hewitt defeated Rutgers, 6-1, 6-1 and Manhattan, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the finals. The two finish the season a perfect 7-0 in doubles play.
Anonsen cruised to win three vicories in the second doubles flight to capture the championship. Anonsen did not drop a set and did not allow the opponent to score more than four points in a set. Anonsen finishes the singles season with an incredible 24-5 record.
In the fourth singles flight, Philippe Amireault closed out the season with three straight wins, improving to 21-7 in singles play. He defeated Manhattanville, St. Peter's and Hofstra to capture the flight. Amireault used a thrilling 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 win in the finals against Hofstra.
David Hewitt turned in an admirable performance at the fifth flight with victories over Manhattanville, Concordia and St. Peter's. Hewitt was dominant, not dropping a set and did not allow any of his opponents more than two points in a set. Hewitt came on strong at the end of the season in singles and finishes with an 18-10 record.
The Seawolves enjoyed an incredible season, winning a school record 15 dual matches. Stony Brook does not graduate anyone and will enter the America East Conference next season.
