The Stony Brook volleyball team (14-8/0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Hartford Hawks (10-7/1-0), but fell in five games (30-25, 30-27, 27-30, 26-30, 11-15) after a late Hartford rally. The match was the first conference competition of the 2002 season for both schools.
The Seawolves had two players finish the match with double-doubles. Senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) and junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Pa.) each hit double figures in kills and digs. Goldsmith led all Seawolves with 16 kills to go with her 10 digs and Byerly was second on the team with 14. Sophomore Valerie Maloy (Gibsonia, Pa.) was third with 13 kills and sophomore Maria Samilo's (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) 10 kills brought the number of Seawolves with double-digit kills to four.
Sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) finished with 53 assists and eights kills and sophomore Abby Egan (Lansing, Mich.) was tops on the defensive end with 12 digs.
Stony Brook's remaining matches in 2002 will all be against America East competition. The Seawolves travel to Northeastern to battle the Huskies on Friday and take on the New Hampshire Wildcats Saturday. Those matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
