Swimming Sweeps Iona, St. Francis

New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's swimming team continued its tear, winning its fifth and sixth straight meets, while the women's team picked up two victories as the Seawolves defeated both Iona College and St. Francis in tri-meet action on Tuesday night.

Laura Zuffante, Jessica Claud and Erin Bowman each picked up individual victories. Zuffante captured the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:18.42, while Claud won the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.98. Bowman dominated the 1000 freestyle, placing first by more than six seconds(11:03.70.)

The Seawolves also won the 400 medley relay, as Kim Harris, Claud, Zuffante and Starlyn Rupinski recorded a time of 4:09.37 for first place. The free relay team of Ursala Pawelko, Kris Yturraspe, Erin Bowman and Jamie Bevilacqua captured first in 3:50.70.

Erin Byrnes and Kristi Schubert each posted a victory in diving action. Byrnes won the one-meter title while Schubert was runner-up. The two flip-flopped in the three-meter competition with Schubert winning the event.

On the men's side, Stony Brook was outstanding, winning eight of nine individual races and capturing both relays. Ted Freeborn and Kyle Thornton led the way with two first place finishes apiece. Freeborn won the 200 freestyle (1:50.96) and the 100 freestyle (49.79), while Thornton posted victories in the 200 individual medley (2:00.69) and the 500 free (4:54.35).

In other individual results, James Payne won the 50 free (22.18), Nathan French captured the 200 butterfly (2:01.78), Jason Ferrara placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:06.83) and Kirill Alekseyev won the 200 breaststroke (2:21.36).

The Seawolves were just as impressive in the relay events. The 400 free relay team of French, Freeborn, Payne and Dan Berzansky won the event by almost 15 seconds, posting a time of 3:19.75. French, Ryan Krompinger, Ben Abrams and Berzansky kept it up in the 400 medley relay, winning in 3:44.66.

Freshman diver Pat Marcel swept both diving events, recording almost 40 points more than his nearest competitor on the one-meter and winning the three-meter event by 19 points.

The team returns to action on Dec. 7 when the Seawolves travel to face Binghamton and St. Peter's.
