Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team (12-13 overall, 2-4 America East) was well on its way to a sweep of America East Conference leader Boston University (10-18, 5-1 America East) in a doubleheader at University Field on Saturday afternoon, but the Seawolves settled for a split. After winning game one 1-0, the Seawolves opened up a 2-0 lead in the nightcap before BU rallied to win 3-2 in extra innings.
Game one proved to be a pitcher's dual as the teams managed just seven hits combined. Stony Brook's Stephanie Poetzsch allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out a total of 13 batters, including a string of seven straight that spanned the first three innings. The Seawolves' Stephanie DiBiase belted a home run over the left field fence on the first pitch from Robyn Horrick to give Stony Brook the early 1-0 lead. However, Horrick settled down after that and allowed just three more hits, striking out a total of 10 on the day.
Poetzsch's complete game shutout marked her second straight as she earned her 10th win of the year. DiBiase and Colleen McCarthy each had two hits for the Seawolves.
Poetzsch returned to the mound for game two, and early on it seemed she would be on her way to another victory. The Seawolves got on board early with an RBI infield hit from Shea Carpenter in the first inning. Two batters later, Amanda Staschuk poked a shot into right field to send Kristen Brust home.
The Terriers went scoreless until the fourth when Julie Henneke belted a home run to cut the lead to 2-1. Two innings later, Henneke did more damage when she opened the inning with a triple to right field. Ayrn Rangel followed with an RBI single that scored Henneke for the tie. The Seawolves couldn't get the bats going against Henneke, who went to the mound for starting pitcher Tiffany Finateri in the bottom of the sixth. After a scoreless seventh, the game was sent to extra innings.
It was Henneke who put the Seawolves away for good, opening the eighth with her second home run of the game to give BU the 3-2 edge. The Seawolves went down in order in the bottom of the inning, as Henneke struck out all three to earn the win on the mound.
Poetzsch (10-7) struck out 10 and walked just one, but gave up nine hits to pick up the loss. Carpenter and Brust led the Seawolves at the plate with a pair of hits apiece.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow against BU in a doubleheader at University Field. Game time is set for noon.
