The Stony Brook tennis team split with Hartford in the America East Conference opener on Saturday. The women's team dominated the Hawks in a 6-0 win, while Hartford rallied to defeat the Seawolves men's team, 4-3.
In the men's match, the Seawolves captured the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches, but dropped four of six singles matches for the loss. Jens Pillgram-Larsen and Gareth Williams won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, but both lost their singles matches. Pillgram-Larsen fell 6-4, 7-5 to Pedja Zdrakovic, while Williams fell in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. No. 2 singles player Egil Anonsen also fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and the Hawks captured the No. 4 singles match for the win.
David Hewitt won 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 singles, while No. 6 James Carpenter recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win for the Seawolves.
The women's team won five singles matches and captured the doubles point in their 6-0 win. Martha Barrett won both of her singles and doubles matches, as did Karen Hansen. Barrett dropped just three games at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Hansen recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. The tandem won 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match.
Patricia Gomez and Georgia Bushell teamed up to win, 8-2, at the No. 2 doubles spot to give the Seawolves the doubles point.
Bushell also won in singles, posting a 6-1, 6-1, victory at No. 4. No. 5 Olesya Ianovitch recorded a 6-0, 6-0, victory, while Deanna Ghozati captured a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
The women's team improves to 9-4 overall while the men's team is now 8-5.
