Final Stats

Moon Township, Pa. - The Stony Brook women's volleyball team downed the Navy Midshipmen by a score of 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-27, 30-26) to kickoff the Robert Morris Kings Classic and its 2002 season. Junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill.) posted an impressive 22 kills in the four matches and senior Latoya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) was close behind with 20 kills.

After dropping the first game to Navy, the Seawolves claimed the next three thanks to top performances from their attack and stout defense when it was needed. The Pack dominated match two, 30-20. Goldsmith had a solid all-around performance, posting five kills and five digs. Sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) keyed the attack with 11 assists and sophomore Danielle MacKnight (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was also tough on defense with four digs of her own.

Zub clinched the game three victory with a block to give the Pack a 2-1 advantage. Byerly and Goldsmith combined for 14 kills in the 30-27 win and sophomore Valerie Maloy (Gibsonia, Pa.) chipped in with a powerful three of her own.

The final match displayed the determination of the Seawolves. Down 15-6, Stony Brook fought back to eventually nab the win. Freshman Sarah Bauer (Cincinnati, Ohio) provided a spark off the bench and charted two kills in the Seawolf comeback. Freshman Abby Egan (Lansing, Mich.) was tough on the defense throughout the day at her libero position, posting15 digs. Zub and Byerly teamed up once more to end the game and the match, clinching The Packs first win of 2002.

Stony Brook is back in action later tonight when it takes on host school, Robert Morris, at 8 p.m.
