Stony Brook Victorious In Tournament Opener

The Stony Brook volleyball team opened the 2002 Western New York Holiday Inn Invitational with a 3-0 (32-30, 30-28, 30-21) shutout victory over the hosting Canisius Golden Griffins (2-9). The win is the Seawolves tenth of the year, leaving them with a 10-3 just over a third of the way into the season.

Stony Brook was led by impressive performances by the sophomore duo of Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) and Danielle MacKnight (Valley Stream, N.Y.). Both Zub and MacKnight hit over .700 in the shutout win, with Zub coming in at a .714 clip while MacKnight led all players with her .750 attack percentage. MacKnight was also tied for the match-lead in total kills with 13. Zub posted seven of her own.

Supporting the Zub and MacKnight attack was junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill.) and senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas). The two scored 11 and seven kills respectively. On the defensive front, The Pack was lead by two 10-dig performances from Byerly and sophomore Abby Egan (Lansing, Mich.). Sophomore Maria Samilo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) also chipped in with a prefect 3-for-3 kill performance on the evening.

The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow with two matches on the agenda. The team travels to Niagara, N.Y. to take on Cleveland St. for a match scheduled for a 10:00 am start, then close out their road trip with a match against Youngstown St. back in Buffalo at 4:30 pm.
