Freshman Michael Crooks captured the Flight Two singles title at the UConn Invitational on Sunday.
After straight set victories in the first two rounds of play, Crooks faced Matt Schor of UConn in the semifinals. Crooks fell behind, dropping the first set, 6-4, but came back to earn a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory and a berth in the finals. Crooks had an easier time in the finals against David Slater of Marist, winning 6-2, 6-2, to win the title.
Crooks was one of three Seawolves to advance to the semifinals in singles play. Egil Anonsen fell to Mike Furman of UConn, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals, and James Carpenter was defeated by Viktor Sapezhinikov, as Sapezhinikov earned a comeback 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
The Seawolves also did well Flight Two doubles, with Philippe Amireault and Carpenter advancing to the finals against UConn. UConn managed to outlast the Seawolves, 9-7, to win the title.
Stony Brook returns to action when the Seawolves host the Stony Brook Four-Way Oct. 11-12.
