Stony Brook Slips to St. John's

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams slipped to Long Island neighbor St. John's Saturday afternoon at University Pool on the campus of Stony Brook University. The men (8-3) fell 148-125 and the Seawolves fell by a score of 149-122.

Despite the loss, Stony Brook had several impressive performances on the women's side. Kim Harris just missed breaking the school record in the backstroke with her time of 1:00.98. Harris currently holds the record at 1:00.49. Harris did topple a record with her time of 25.46 in the 50 free. The record stood at 25.59 and was held by Jessica Claud. Claud posted a good showing in the 100 breast. She charted a second place finish with her time of 1:10.94.

The Seawolves also had strong showings in the men's competition. Matt Hanson took the top spot in the 100 fly with his time of 52.23 and then went on to slice more than two seconds off the school record in the 200 fly thanks to his 1:53.45. The previous record stood at the 1:56.00 mark. Nathan French also had a first place finish with his time of 2:01.75 in the 200 IM. The relay team of Hanson, James Payne, Dan Berzansky and Ted Freeborn took first in the 200 free relay with their 1:28.55 and French, Hanson, Payne and Kyle Thornton took second in the 200 medley relay with their 1:38.57. Kirill Alekseyev was second in the 100 breast with his 1:03.62 as was Payne in the 50 free. Freeborn was runner-up in the 100 free with his time of 49.02 and French scored a runner-up spot in the 200 back with his 1.57.38. Billy Fick kept the streak alive with his second place finish in the 500 free.

Both the men's and women's teams are back in action Saturday as they travel to Fairfield, Conn., to take on the Fairfield Stags. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
