Men's Swimming Opens Season With Win Over Providence

Providence, R.I. - The Stony Brook University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the season with impressive victories over Providence College today, with the men winning 119-90 and the women posting a 130-108 victory. Both teams are now 1-0 on the season.

The women's side featured nine first place finishes by the Stony Brook team. In the day's very first event, the 400 meter medley relay, Jamie Bevilacqua, Allison DeSanti, Kim Harris and Allison Porteus posted a first place time of 4:35.13, 15 seconds faster than the second place Providence team. Bevilacqua came home with two more first places in the meet, taking the 50 and 100 meter freestyle events with times of 28.56 and 1:02.04 respectively. Teammate Shirlee Manoogian posted two first places of her own with wins in the 200 meter freestyle (2:12.46) and 400 meter freestyle (4:37.90). Two events saw Stony Brook swimmers win first and second place, with Kim Harris (1:08.29) and Daniela Sepulveda (1:14.04) dominating the 100 meter backstroke and Allison DeSanti (2:30.43) and Harris (2:31.25) taking the top two spots in the 200 meter individual medley.

The men's team was equally impressive with nine first place finishes of their own. Nathan French garnered three first place finishes, winning the 100 meter backstroke (1:01.24), 200 meter freestyle (2:01.11) and teaming with Ted Freeborn, Matt Hanson and Frank Schursky to win the 400 meter medley relay (4:08.79). Hanson also took first in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 59.87. The trio of Kyle Thornton, Kirill Alexseyev and Hanson took first through third in the 200 meter individual medley, with Thornton also taking home the 400 meter freestyle (4:23.63).

Stony Brook dominated the women's one meter diving event, taking the top three spots with outstanding efforts by Kristen Pagano (147.98), Hailey Lewandowski (143.18) and Erin Byrnes (141.75). Brian Leight was the only participant in the men's one meter dive with a 74.78 total.

Both teams are back in action October 28 at Army. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
