Lehigh pulled off an upset of Stony Brook Saturday afternoon, dropping the ECAC 16th ranked Seawolves 4-3. The win moves Lehigh to 3-1 on the season, while Stony Brook falls to 1-4.
The afternoon action started with doubles play. Lehigh managed a pair of wins, winning first and third doubles. In first doubles, the tandem of Ty Esler/Ryan Cann defeated Mike Crooks/Egil Anonsen 8-5. Jonathan Swanson and Craig Ditman fell in No. 2 doubles to Jean-Francois Robitaille and David Hewitt, 8-4, setting the stage for the third and final doubles match of the afternoon. In third doubles, Randall Smalley/Andrew Shapiro defeated Philippe Amireault/Patrick Drozdzik 8-4.
On the singles side, Lehigh dropped its first match 6-4, 6-3, as Esler fell to Michael Crooks. The Mountain Hawks would go on to win their next three singles matches with victories by Cann, Smalley, and Swanson. Anonsen and Drozdzik, playing at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, took their matches to three sets before before falling to the Mountain Hawks. Stony Brook bounced back, winning fifth and sixth singles. Hewitt defeated Ditman at No.5, 6-3, 6-2, while Amireault recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hefter at No. 6. However, the doubles point proved to be the difference.
Stony Brook returns to action on March 9 when they take on Connecticut and Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
