The Stony Brook men's and women's tennis teams earned a split with Hofstra in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The women's team came out on top, 5-2, while the Pride handed the men's team a 4-3 setback.
In women's action, the Seawolves (5-6) won the doubles point then captured four singles matches. Anne Cathrine Valle and Patricia Gomez won their sixth straight doubles match with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Georgia Bushell and Karen Hansen posted a 9-7 victory at No. 2. The Hofstra duo of Mayo Hosado and Jillian Schalk defeated Stony Brook's No. 3 team of Lauren Conching and Ashley Ward, 8-2.
Valle continued her impressive singles play as well, winning her sixth straight match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Erika Reggienni at No. 1 singles. Hansen captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Allison Kelly at No. 3 singles, while Bushell, playing at No. 4, defeated Adriana Segura, 6-4, 6-1. Ward won her match at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Schalk.
Gomez fell, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to Mihaela Stefan, while Conching suffered a 5-7, 6-0 (12-10) loss to Hosado at No. 5 singles.
The men's team (4-7) battled back after losing the doubles point but could manage only three singles victories. Mike Crooks and James Carpenter cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, but Hofstra captured the other two matches for the point. Egil Anonsen and Gareth Williams dropped a 9-8 decision at No. 1, while the No. 2 team of Jean-Francois Robitaille and David Hewitt lost for just the third time this spring by a score of 8-3.
In singles, three Seawolves stretched their matches to three sets after dropping the first set. At No. 4 singles, Hofstra's Jared Coggan won the first set over Hewitt, 6-2, but could not manage to win a game after that as Hewitt posted a 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 victory. At No. 1 singles, Crooks evened the match after dropping the first set but Hofstra's Nikola Djordjevic came away with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory. Robitaille, playing at No. 3, fell in three sets to Matt Schur, 6-2, 6-7, 6-0.
Philippe Amireault and Carpenter posted the other two singles victories for the Seawolves. Amireault, facing Gary Gait in the No. 5 spot, won his fourth straight singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while Carpenter recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Robert Sforza at No. 6.
Anonsen fell to Rodrigo Texeira at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Stony Brook returns to action on Wednesday against America East Conference foe Hartford in a match that was rescheduled from an earlier date. The match begins at noon.
