Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team extended its winning streak to six games as the Seawolves completed a four-game sweep of Binghamton at University Field Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves won game one, 4-2, and captured the nightcap, 6-2, to improve to 25-31 on the season, tying the record for most wins in a season in Stony Brook softball history.
After Binghamton (17-22, 7-13 America East) took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single from Jennifer Richardson in the top of the third, but two costly Bearcat errors and three Stony Brook hits allowed the Seawolves to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Afer Colleen McCarthy and Stephanie DiBiase each collected a base hit, Kristen Brust later reached on an error that allowed DiBiase to score. Hayley Durham followed with a two-out double that plated Brust. Durham reached third on the throw, then came home on a throwing error by the catcher.
One frame later, Stony Brook added to lead. An Amanda Cavitt single up the middle advanced Stephanie McCarthy to second. An error by the centerfielder sent McCarthy to third, and she was sent home when the ball sailed out of play. Rose Barr's RBI single brought the Bearcats to within 4-2 in the top of the sixth, but Binghamton could get no closer.
Kristen Brust was 2-for-3 to lead the Seawolves at the plate, while Jessica Chellis, Barre and Christine Sweeney each collected a pair of hits for the Bearcats.
Stony Brook's Angela Andrews (17-18) earned her fourth straight win, allowing two runs on nine hits, walking none and striking out five in a complete-game performance. Binghamton's Mary Karen Wheat (5-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out three in six innings.
Stony Brook completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap, despite a late rally by the Bearcats. Stony Brook again went back in front in the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice from Laura Bradford. The Seawolves extended the lead to 5-1 in the fifth, thanks to DiBiase's second dinger of the afternoon, this a three-run shot over the left field wall. The Seawolves added to the lead an inning later with a sacrifice fly from Cavitt that plated Jane Stein.
Binghamton rallied in the top of the seventh with another RBI single from Weeks that made the score 6-2.
