New Hampshire Holds Off Women's Basketball 63-56

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Maren Matthias scored 15 points and added 12 rebounds to power New Hampshire to a 63-56 win over Stony Brook in America East women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The win improves New Hampshire to 6-5 overall, 1-1 in conference play while Stony Brook slid to 2-9, 1-1.

UNH's Ray Williams hit a layup with 8:32 remaining in the game to cap a 10-3 run and give the Wildcats a 48-37 lead. Sherry Jordan then sparked a Seawolves comeback and her basket at the 2:56 mark drew Stony Brook within 55-52.

Matthias then came up big for UNH, converting a putback layup and another from close range to extend the Wildcat lead to six. Stony Brook got as close as 60-56 on a Mykeema Ford 3-pointer with 24 seconds to go. SB could get no closer as the Wildcats sealed the win at the free throw line.

Jordan recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. In doing so, she moved into fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,356 career points, surpassing Cordella Hill who notched 1,349 points during her four-year career.

Jessica Smith scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Ford also pitched in with 11.

New Hampshire jumped out to a 17-9 advantage over the first eight minutes of the game, getting six points from Matthias during that stretch. A Ford layup followed by consecutive baskets by Smith helped SB cut the lead to 19-15, but the Wildcats responded with a 7-0 run to take a 26-15 lead at 6:48.

Stony Brook then went on a 13-4 run to close within 30-28 with 42 seconds remaining in the half. Danielle Clark converted a three-point play late in the half to send the visitors into the break with a 33-28 lead. Clark finished with 11 points on the afternoon.

The Seawolves are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Vermont at 7:00 p.m.
