Stony Brook snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over UMBC in both team's America East volleyball opener at the Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Stony Brook improved to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Retrievers fell to 8-9 and 0-1.
The Seawolves came out attacking in game 1, posting 20 kills while hitting .394 to open with a 30-22 victory. Both teams struggled in the second frame, with SB hitting .188 and UMBC just .038, as the Seawolves won 30-22. The home team bounced back to wrap things up in the third with a convincing 30-17 victory.
Maria Samilo led SB's offensive attack, posting a match-high 14 kills while hitting .370. Moran Sweany picked up 11 kills and 10 digs, while Julie Zub chipped in with 40 assists and 12 digs.
The Retrievers were led by Jocelyn Teoh's seven kills.
The Seawolves are back in action at home vs. Seton Hall on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
