The Stony Brook volleyball team was unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead against UMBC on Tuesday night, falling to the Retrievers 15-30, 26-30, 30-28, 30-20, 15-13. With the loss, the Seawolves' record fell to 11-13 overall, 3-5 in the America East, while UMBC improved to 12-13, 3-5.
The Seawolves dominated UMBC in the opening game of the match for a 30-15 win, tallying six service aces and hitting .435 for the game. The team posted 15 kills in Game 2 to take command of the contest with a 30-26 win, but were unable to hold on the lead as the Retrievers won the final three games of the evening to take home the victory.
The Seawolves were led by a match-high 21 kills from Maria Samilo and 49 assists from Julie Zub. Samilo hit an impressive .439, totalling just three errors in 41 attacks while Danielle MacKnight had an excellent night as well, adding 12 kills while hitting .478. Abby Egan had a match-high 17 digs and Morgan Sweany posted a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs for Stony Brook.
The Seawolves are back in action this Friday when the host New Hampshire at 7 p.m. at the Stony Brook Sports Complex.
