Pittsburgh Slips by Women's Basketball 89-86

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Pittsburgh's Amy Kunich hit a pair of free throws and came up with a huge steal with four seconds left in the game at the Panthers held on to top Stony Brook 89-86 in the second game of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Indoor Sports Complex.

With the game tied at 84 with 1:08 remaining, Mykeema Ford hit a pair of free throws to give Stony Brook (0-3) a two-point lead. Pittsburgh's (6-0) Katie Histed responded by burrying a three with 28 seconds to go.

After a timeout, SB's Cheri Davis turned the ball over and the Seawolves were forced to foul. Kunich sank both free throws to put the Panthers back up, 89-86. A Pitt defender tipped the inbounds pass and Kunich scooped up the ball as time expired.

Leading by six at the break, Pitt opened up as much as a 12 point advantage two minutes into the second half. The Seawolves were able to chip at the lead, as Ford burried a three sandwiched around a pair of threes by Jessie Boylan to take their first lead since the opening minute of the game at 71-69 with 8:31 to play.

The teams traded leads for the next seven minutes before Histed connected on the three-pointer to give Pitt the lead for good.

Ford led all scorers with 24 points to go with seven assists, while Jessica Smith added 22 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Kelly Watson chipped in with 11 points, five boards and four assists for SB.

Jennifer Brown led Pitt with 22 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Histed added 21 points,while Vika Sholokhova netted 14.

The Seawolves are back in action at the HIE Invite on Sunday vs. Long Beach State (2-1). Tip off is set for 11:30 a.m.
