Stony Brook Falls Short At Rhode Island, 62-56

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island survived a late run by Stony Brook to break a five-game losing streak with a 62-56 win on Wednesday night.

Stony Brook (3-3) went on a 15-3 run to cut a 14-point Rhode Island lead to 52-50 with 3:27 remaining in the game. But the Rams (2-5) hung on by sinking 5-of-6 free throws in the final 27 seconds.

Scott Hazelton led Rhode Island with 20 points. Ty Sullivan added 10 and made four foul shots down the stretch to ice the win.

Mitchell Beauford led Stony Brook with 21 points and converted a three-point play to pull his team within 52-50. But he went to the bench with a right ankle injury after making the free throw and did not return.

Stony Brook had a chance to tie the game, trailing 57-54 with 32 seconds to play, but Antwan Hardy's three-pointer was off the mark.

Cori Spencer had 14 points for Stony Brook and Hardy had 10.

Rhode Island went on a 17-4 run over a span of 5:26 in the first half to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 28-16 lead. Terrence Mack and Hazelton each scored five points during that run.
