Men's Soccer Tops Marist 2-1 in OT

Sept. 4, 2004

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Michael Palacio netted the game-winning goal with 55 seconds remaining in the first overtime to send Stony Brook to a 2-1 victory over Marist in the Seawolves' season-opener on Saturday night at LaValle Stadium. The game marked new head coach Cesar Markovic's first win for the Seawolves. Stony Brook opens the 2004 season 1-0, while the Red Foxes fall to 0-2 on the season. With under a minute to go in the first OT, Chris Megaloudis drove a ball along the 18-yard line and found Palacio who tucked a shot inside the left post for the game-winner. After a scoreless first half, the visitors got on the board first at the 77:21 mark as Keith Deteltj centered a pass from the right goal line and Alex Giotis fed Anthony Graci, who sent the ball past SB goalkeeper John Moschella. The Seawolves tied it up just under six minutes later as Jose Sura one-timed a pass from Palacio into the center of the net to make it 1-1. Moschella turned away five shots in his Seawolf debut, while Valenti made three saves for the Red Foxes. The Seawolves return to action on September 11-12 when they travel to compete in the Niagara Invitational.
