Stony Brook Volleyball Falls to New Hampshire in Five

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook volleyball team lost a hard fought battle to New Hampshire 3-2 (30-21, 30-19, 27-30, 29-31, 9-15). The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Morgan Sweany, but fell short in the five game match. With the loss the Seawolves fall to 8-13 and 2-4 in the America East. UNH improves to 5-16 and 2-4 in conference play.

Stony Brook outhit the Wildcats .273 to .091 as it opened up the match with a 30-21 victory in Game 1. Morgan Sweany paced the Seawolves attack with six kills, while Noelle Bay added three service aces as SB took the early lead.

New Hampshire would commit 16 errors in a Game 2 in which both squads hit negative. Stony Brook took Game 2 30-19. Sarah Votruba added four blocks as the Seawolves grabbed a 2-0 match lead.

In Game 3, the two teams traded leads until they were all knotted up at 12 all. Stony Brook, behind the serving of Sarah Votruba extended the lead to 17-13 before UNH came roaring back and would tie the match at 18-18. The two teams went back and forth in a see-saw battle before UNH won Game 3, 30-27.

In the fourth game, New Hampshire was in control early and built a 25-18 lead. The Seawolves would battle back to grab a 28-27 lead. UNH would then go on a 4-1 run to close it out 31-29.

In the final game, UNH grabbed control early and closed out the match 15-9.

Sweany led the way for Stony Brook with 13 kills and Sarah Votruba added 10 blocks in the loss. Erin Walker led the way for New Hampshire, totaling 16 kills and 16 digs. Katie Steffens contributed 11 blocks for the Wildcats.

The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, October 26 when they welcome non-conference foe Fordham to the Indoor Sports Complex at 7:00 PM.
