UMBC Rallies Past Volleyball 3-1

Baltimore, Md. - After winning the opening game, Stony Brook dropped three straight games as UMBC rallied past the Seawolves 3-1 (22-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-23). Morgan Sweany finished the match with a double-double and Claire Lindner added a match-high 31 digs for the Seawolves. With the loss Stony Brook falls to 7-11 and 1-3 in America East Conference play, while UMBC improves to 8-10, 2-2.

Stony Brook forced the Retrievers to burn their second timeout after opening Game 1 with a 17-8 lead. The SB advantage would grow to as many as 12 at 22-10 before the Seawolves closed out the first game 30-22. SB outhit UMBC .286 to .056 in Game 1.

The Retrievers evened the match at one game a piece with a 30-22 victory in Game 2. UMBC led the entire game and allowed the Seawolves to only get as close as three at 12-9.

Game 3 was a see-saw battle that saw seven ties before UMBC was able to mount a 24-19 lead. Stony Brook fought back to cut the lead to three at 24-21, but the Retrievers were able to grab a 2-1 advantage in the match with the 30-25 Game 3 win.

UMBC led the entire way in Game 4 and led by as many as seven as they closed out the match with a 30-23 win.

Sweany paced the Stony Brook attack with 16 kills and 17 digs. Melissa Votruba added 15 kills and Sarah Votruba contributed 12 kills in the loss.

Freshman Sarah Ball led the way for UMBC with a match-high 18 kills. Christine Skala added 23 digs for the Retrievers.

The Seawolves next match is Thursday, October 13 when they travel for a non-conference game at Seton Hall. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
