Maralene Zwarich scored 27 points, including 18 in the second half, to lift Northeastern over Stony Brook, 78-75, in the teams' regular season finale on Saturday at Solomon Court. The Seawolves end the regular season having lost five straight to fall to 8-19 overall and 6-12 in America East play, while the Huskies improved to 13-14 and 8-10.
NU led by five points with under four minutes to play, but the Seawolves tied it at 70 at the 2:30 mark after a three-point play by Cheri Davis and a pair of free throws by Kelly Watson. Davis' layup after a Huskies turnover gave the Seawolves a two point lead with 1:38 left, but Zwarich answered with five straight points and Francesca Vanin followed with a layup to push NU's lead back to four points at 76-72 with 18 seconds to go.
The Seawolves turned the ball over on their next possession and were forced to foul. Zwarich sank both free throws to make it a six point game at 78-72 with eight seconds left. Watson drilled a three-pointer just before the buzzer to account for the final score.
Jessica Smith led the Seawolves with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Mykeema Ford netted a team-high 19 points. Dana Ferraro added 12 points and six boards before fouling out midway through the second half.
Zwarich led Northeastern with a game-high 27 points, while Vanin finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday at the America East Tournament when they take on Boston University at 6:00 p.m.
