Men's and Women's Tennis Cruise Past Hartford

Hartford, Conn. - The Stony Brook men's and women's tennis teams eased to victories at Hartford on Saturday afternoon as the men earned a 5-1 win and the women swept all six singles matches for a 6-0 victory. With the wins, the men improve to 14-8 and the women stand at 14-7.

On the women's side, the Seawolves dissected the Hawks without losing a set. Hana Chovanova won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, Anne Cathrine Valle won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Sandy Wijeratne had no problems at No. 3 in a 6-0, 6-0 victory and Monica Myers handled her opponent in a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4. After putting the match away with the first four wins, Victoria Vasile (8-2) and Arlene Barksdale (8-2) finished Hartford off at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

In men's action, Stony Brook dropped just one match in a 5-1 victory over the Hawks. Jan Krejci (6-4, 6-4), Tal Meir (6-3, 6-1) and David Kortum (6-2, 6-2) won in straight sets at No. 1, 2 and 4, respectively, while Michael Crooks (1-6, 6-4, {10-4}) pulled out a three-set win and Matt Jacobson downed his opponent 8-3.

The men's team is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. versus Boston University in the final home match of the regular season. It will be Senior Day for Krejci and fellow senior James Carpenter.

The women will return to the court on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Queens College in their final match of the regular season.
