Weekend Tennis Wrap-Up

Stony Brook, NY - It was a busy weekend for the Stony Brook tennis program as both the men's and women's teams went a perfect 5-0 in a combined five dual matches. The men's team went a perfect 2-0 on Saturday with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth. The women defeated local rival Hofstra on Saturday before defeating Long Island University and FDU on Sunday.

On Saturday, the men's team defeated both FDU and Monmouth. In the match against FDU, Stony brook won two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Nihal Advani and Quirijn Van Veen bested Gross and Eddins at No. 1, 8-5, and Ilan Shvartz and Jon Epstein defeated Piven and Kolomeits at No. 3, 8-3. In singles the Seawolves swept all six lines as Stony Brook defeated FDU 7-0. Advani won at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2, Shvartz won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3, Van Veen was victorious at No. 3, Youssef Fassi-Fehri won at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3, Alex Markovich won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1, and Epstein completed the sweep at No. 6, 6-1, 6-1.

Later in the day the Seawolves men's team defeated Monmouth 6-1. Stony Brook once again took two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Advani and Van Veen won at No. 1, 8-1, and Matt Jacobson and Markovich won at No. 3, 8-1. In singles, Advani won at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4, Shvartz won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2, Van Veen won at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2, Fassi-Fehri was victorious at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, and Eugene Tsarevskiy won at No. 6, 6-3, 6-4.

The women's team began its weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Long Island rival Hofstra. Sandy Wijeratne and Erica Federgreen defeated Lara Crouch and Stacy Kent at No. 1, 9-8 (8-6), and Monica Myers and Victoria Vasile beat Valerie McDonald and Lauren Moeller at No. 2, 8-0. Hofstra defaulted both No. 5 and No. 6 singles and the Seawolves claimed lines one through four in the 7-0 win. Paola Rodolfi defeated Crouch at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, Wijeratne defeated Kent at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, Federgreen bested McDonald at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0, and Victoria Vovsha defeated Moeller at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.

On Sunday, the women opened the day with a 4-3 win over LIU and then followed it up with a 6-1 win over FDU. In the morning match against LIU, the Blackbirds won two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Rodolfi and Vovsha were the sole winners at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Stony Brook won four of six singles matches to earn the 4-3 win. Wijeratne won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, Federgreen was leading 1-0 at No. 3 when her opponent retired, Myers won at No. 5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, and Caitlin Crowley won at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.

In the 6-1 win over the Knights, Stony Brook swept all three doubles matches as Wijeratne and Federgreen won at No. 1, 8-1, Radolfi and Vovsha won at No. 2, 8-2 and Crowley and Arlene Barksdale won at No. 3, 8-0. In singles, Stony Brook won five of six to clinch the match. Radolfi won at No. 2, 6-1, 2-6, 10-1, Federgreen won at No. 3, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5, Crowley won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, Shaina Murugan won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0, and Barksdale was victorious at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.

The women's team will return to action when they compete in the Big Green Invite on October 28 and the men's team will play next at the ITA Regionals on October 19.
