Box Score

Junior midfielder Michael Palacio delivered home a one-time strike in the 28th minute to set the tone early as the Stony Brook University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season in a 2-0 victory over Iona at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With the win the Seawolves improve to 1-3 while Iona falls to 1-2-1 on the season.

In the home-opener, Palacio notched a glorious goal as he struck a ball in midair just inside the 18-yard box off a failed clear by an Iona defender and buried the ball into the back of the net.

In the waning minutes, Alexander Betancourt slipped a ball through the Iona onside trap to a streaking Mahamadou Simpara. Simpara lofted the ball over the outstretched arms of Iona keeper Nils Binstock to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead in the 89th minute.

For Palacio and Simpara it was their first tallies in the 2006 season.

EJ Xikis recorded a shutout after making just two saves and facing 11 shots by the Gaels. The Seawolves out shot Iona 12-11 on the night.

Stony Brook returns to action when they travel to take on UNC Wilmington in the UNCW/Jameson Inn Soccer Classic on Friday, September 8th. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
