Wilmington, N.C. -
Pedro Pereira's 30-yard blast in the 76th minute rallied UNC Wilmington to a 2-1 victory over Stony Brook on Friday in the second game of the UNCW/Jameson Inn Soccer Classic at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks entered the final 17 minutes trailing before staging their comeback.
The Seawolves dip to 1-4 on the season while UNCW improves to 3-1 with their third straight win.
Stony Brook jumped in front for a 1-0 lead on senior Adam Ciklic's second goal of the season at the 27:59 mark of the first half. Junior Michael Palacio started the play with a 20-yard blast from off the cross bar where Ciklic gathered the rebound and beat UNCW goalkeeper Brad Knighton inside the right post.
Rick Henderson brought the Seahawks even at 73:54 with his first goal of the season. Knighton cleared the ball to senior Russell Bienias at the top of the Stony Brook penalty box where he found a streaking Henderson on the leftside for the goal.
Just 1:54 later, Periera broke the deadlock as his shot caromed off junior goalkeeper EJ Xikis' hands into the leftside of the goal.
Palacio narrowly missed tying the game in the 88th minute with a header, but Knighton, who finished with six saves, caught the ball diving back toward the goal line.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as Stony Brook faces Denver in the final game of the UNCW/Jameson Inn Classic.
