Senior Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 23 kills to lead the Stony Brook women's volleyball team to a 3-2 (30-32, 30-24, 27-30, 30-23, 15-13) victory over New Hampshire on Friday night. The Seawolves go to 15-7 and 3-1 while the Wildcats fall to 13-7 and 2-3.
Junior Noelle Bay (Selden, N.Y.) added a match-best 26 digs for the Seawolves while senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif.) registered a double-double (19 kills, 24 digs).
The opening game was close all the way with neither team opening a lead of more than four points. The Wildcats would take a 29-27 lead but the Seawolves rallied to tie it on an Ahlers kills and a New Hampshire attack error. But with Stony Brook up 30-29, the Wildcats scored three straight points to take game one 32-30.
Stony Brook led most of the way in game two, pushing an early three-point lead (15-12) up to eight at 25-17 on a kill from Ahlers and consecutive Wildcat attack errors. New Hampshire would get no closer than six from there as the Seawolves went on to a 30-24 victory to even the match at one.
Game three was close most of the way with the Seawolves taking a 26-25 lead on an Ahlers kill but the Wildcats then scored five of the last six points of the match to take the game and a 2-1 lead.
The Seawolves rallied once again though, breaking a 20-20 tie by scoring six of seven points highlighted by two more kills from Ahlers. Stony Brook then closed the game out on a kill from senior Amy Oleksiej (Coram, N.Y.) to send it to a decisive fifth game.
Stony Brook raced out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth game, forcing a Wildcat timeout on consecutive kill from Ahlers. New Hampshire rallied to tie the game at 11 but the Seawolves got a kill from Oleksiej to take the lead for good, closing it out on a another kill from Oleksiej.
Overall there were a total of 53 ties and 20 lead changes in the match. Kirsten Bates led the Wildcats with 32 kills while Alyse Lahti tallied a team-high 22 digs.
