Senior Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 15 kills and seniors Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Amy Oleksiej (Coram, N.Y.) added 10 apiece to lead the Stony Brook women's volleyball team to its sixth straight victory, a 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-20) victory over Hartford on Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook Arena. The first-place Seawolves go to 18-7 overall and 6-1 in the America East while Hartford falls to 7-18 and 0-7.
Oleksiej compiled an attack percentage of .562 for the Seawolves who hit .333 for the match. Junior Noelle Bay (Selden, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with a match-best 11 digs.
Hartord took leads of 2-0 and 5-3 early in the opening game but an Ahlers kill gave Stony Brook a 6-5 lead and the Seawolves took off from there, going on 12-3 run to take a 17-9 advantage. Stony Brook slowly built its lead from that point, closing out the 14-point victory on a Sweany service ace.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 7-2 lead in game two on the strength of four kills from Ahlers but the Hawks would rally to tie it at nine on a Stony Brook attack error. With the score 16-13 though, the Seawolves went on a 8-1 run to take its largest lead of the game at 24-14 on another Ahlers kill. Stony Brook coasted from there to the 30-19 victory.
The Seawolves used another big run to pull away in game three, going on an 9-2 spurt to push a slim 12-10 ead to 21-12. Hartford would close the lead to seven at 23-16 but Stony Brook scored six of the next seven points, highlighted by consecutive kills from junior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.) to take its largest advantage of the game at 29-17. Hartford would score three straight points before a Sweany kill gave the Seawolves their sixth straight win.
Jennifer Monroy led the Hawks, who were held to a .045 hitting percentage for the match, with seven kills while Sarah Rasor tallied a team-high eight digs.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, hosting Albany at 7 p.m.
