Princeton, N.J. -
Stony Brook's men's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2007-08 season this weekend when five players made the trip to Princeton to take part in the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northeast Tennis Championships. Freshman Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) led the contingent with three wins in singles play.
Baradach opened his competition by winning a pair of singles matches in the singles qualifying draw to earn a place in the main draw of 128 players. In his qualifying matches he defeated Erik Hannah of George Washington, 6-3, 6-1 and then downed Matt Gordon from Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-5, 6-4 to qualify for the main draw.
In his opening match in the main draw scored a comeback win over Loic Sessegesimi of Marist, taking the match in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Baradach's streak came to an end there, however, as he was defeated in the Round of 64 by Harvard's Chris Clayton, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) was the only other Seawolf to score a win at the tournament when he defeated Dave Shaheen of Villanova. Junior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) and sophomore Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel) were both defeated in the first round.
Stony Brook also had a pair of doubles teams in action at the tournament, with the tandems of Fassi-Fehri/ Shvartz and sophomore Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.)/ Rummel both falling in the first round.
