Senior Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 24 kills to lead the Stony Brook women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-16, 30-23) victory over first-place UMBC on Friday night at the Indoor Sports Complex. The Seawolves go to 13-7 overall and 1-1 in the America East while UMBC falls to 16-5 and 2-1.
Ahlers registered an attack percentage of .600 for the Seawolves who also got 16 kills and 10 digs from senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif).
The opening game was close early, but trailing 8-7 the Seawolves went on a 8-2 run highlighted by two kills from Sweany to take a 15-10 advantage. UMBC rallied to tie the game at 21 but the Seawolves got another kill from Sweany to take the lead and they would not relinquish it as they closed the game on a 9-3 run.
The Seaolves jumped on UMBC early in game two, taking a 6-0 lead on back-to-back kills by Ahlers to force the Retrievers to take a timeout. UMBC would close to within 9-6 but Stony Brook went another 8-2 spurt to take a 18-8 lead. The Seawolves coasted from there, hitting .424 in the game on their way to a 2-0 lead.
The teams battled early on in game three but with the score 9-7 the Seawolves scored the next six points on two kills from Ahlers and another from Sweany to take a 15-9 advantage. The Retrievers managed to cut the lead to five at 18-13, but would get no closer as the Seawolves closed it out on a UMBC attack error to complete the sweep.
The Retrievers, who hit just .125, were led by nine kills each from Ashley Oscars and Tiffany Johnson.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, hosting Binghamton at 1 p.m.
