Graduate student Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 26 kills but it wasn't enough as the Stony Brook women's volleyball team fell to Albany 3-2 (25-30, 31-29, 27-30, 30-28, 15-11) in both teams conference opener on Saturday evening.
Senior Morgan Sweany (Mission Viejo, Calif,) added 21 kills and 10 digs for the Seawolves (12-7, 0-1) who saw their eight-match winning streak end. Junior Noelle Bay (Selden, N.Y.) registered a team-high 19 digs for Stony Brook.
The teams battled back and forth early in game one but with the score tied at 13 the Seawolves went on a 10-3 run, highlighted by four kills from Sweany, to take a 23-16 lead. Albany would close the lead to four at 23-19 but Stony Brook outscored UA 7-4 to end the game and take a 1-0 lead.
Albany took game two but the Seawolves responded with a victory in game three closing the game on a 8-4 run after UA tied the game at 22.
Game four was close all the way with neither team holding more than a five-point advantage. The Seawolves rallied late in the game as a Sweany kill capped a 7-2 run to tie the score at 26. The game was tied again at 27 before Albany scored three of the final four points to tie the match at two games apiece.
Stony Brook briefly held a 8-7 lead in game five but Albany scored the next three points and would not relinquish the lead again on its way to a 10th straight win.
Kamisha Kellem led Albany with 18 kills.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, October 5, hosting UMBC at 7 p.m.
