Stony Brook University men's tennis team had four of its members in action this weekend at the Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional competition hosted by Yale University. Sophomore Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) had the best showing for Stony Brook, reaching the round of 16 after winning a pair of matches in the main singles draw.
After receiving a first round bye, Rummel got his competition under way against Alex Vasin from Penn in the second round. After taking a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vasin, Rummel moved on to the third round against Jason Lee from Penn State. He was victorious again, taking a straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 win before he fell in the fourth round to Bogdan Borta from Columbia by a 6-2, 6-4 score.
Junior Ilan Shvartz (Haifa, Israel) also played in the main draw for Stony Brook, but he fell in his first round match to Jamie Cox of Penn State in a three-setter, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. Playing in the consolation singles draw, senior Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco) also won a pair of matches for the Seawolves, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jeremy McClelland of Duquesne and a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Kirill Kasyanov from Sacred Heart before falling to Kendrick Au of Brown by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
Shvartz split a pair of matches in the consolation bracket, starting with a 6-3, 6-3 win over John Drosick of Villanova before dropping a close 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (8) match to Filip Rams of Temple. Junior Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md.) fell in his opening match in the consolation bracket, with Chris Meyer of UMBC getting the 7-5, 6-3 win.
Rummel and Shvartz also teamed up in doubles play, but dropped their only match 8-3 to a team from Yale.
