Box Score
Durham, New Hampshire -
Stony Brook University's volleyball team lost three close sets to New Hampshire in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) loss Sunday afternoon. Junior Kirsten Bates led all players with 15 kills as the Wildcats improved to 5-16 (2-3 America East). With the loss Stony Brook falls to 9-14 (0-5 America East).
Stony Brook was in control of the first frame throughout most of the set, consistently holding off any run made by New Hampshire. After a kill by junior Lindsey Gordon (N. Patchogue, N.Y.) gave Stony Brook a three point lead at 18-15, New Hampshire went on a 7-1 spurt to grab its largest lead of the set at 22-19. The Seawolves bounced back with a 4-1 run of their own, capped by a kill from sophomore Ashley Headen (Hamilton, Va.), to knot the score at 23-23. Following a Stony Brook service error, Pauline Acres registered her fourth kill to give New Hampshire a 1-0 set lead.
Stony Brook stayed close with New Hampshire in the beginning of the second frame as an attack error by the Wildcats tied the set at 10-10. New Hampshire then scored four straight and seven of the next eight points to open a lead the Seawolves would never close.
The third set began almost identically to how the second set did, with the two teams finding themselves knotted at 10-10 before New Hampshire went on another 7-1 run to put the score at 17-11. Stony Brook did rally in the third frame, as a kill from sophomore Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) pulled them within one at 21-20. Bates was just too much to handle, however, recording her final two kills of the match as New Hampshire held off Stony Brook 25-21.
Stony Brook's next match will be Friday night when it hosts Hartford.
