Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook men's soccer team closed out the 2008 season in style, shutting out UMBC, 2-0, at LaValle Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Michele Aquino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied his first career goal and senior Dan Zori (Levittown, N.Y.) recorded his first career win for the Seawolves. Stony Brook finishes the season, 3-12-4, 1-4-3 in America East play while UMBC is 6-9-2, 1-6-1.
Starting his career game in goal, Zori faced just one shot midway through the first half. On the offensive side, Stony Brook started putting the pressure on the UMBC defense when keeper Steve King made a point-blank save on sophomore Mark Secko's (Shoreham, N.Y.) shot in the 21st minute. Two minutes later, junior Petar Rakovic's (Kragujevac, Serbia) serve into the box was taken by Aquino, whose header went off the post and just beyond the goal line to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
UMBC wasn't able to muster any kind of offense. Its only quality scoring chance of the day came in the 73rd minute when off a free kick, Andrew Bulls' shot was punched over the crossbar by senior Dawid Ditrich (Gdansk, Poland).
The Seawolves tallied their second goal of the game in the 80th minute. King came out to play a ball and was beaten to it by Butler. Butler swooped in and scored with the right foot for his second goal of the year.
Zori and Ditrich each played a half and recorded three saves.
